Riks 2JZ "More Ponies" Conversion

Post by SupraLux »

Riks 2JZ conversion was supposed to be Steves 2JZ conversion... due to a bit of arm twisting it became Riks... mainly due to lack of other options to actually be able to turn the tyres fast enough to keep him happy.

...Still, we actually have no idea how fast it will turn them yet since no-one I know has done this conversion (its been done, just not by anyone I know).

Anyway... after finally getting back from Nelson at 2am, I was up again first thing and off down to the shed to get this underway (well, first thing... 11am... all the same really, it was before lunch :) )

Apologies to those with dialup... *I* have dialup and *I* uploaded all the pics then wrote this, so you'll survive I'm sure :)

So, old motor out and on the floor... this took all of about 90 minutes...
Image

Then trial fit the bellhousing (bought off trademe... actually a rough-as-guts mangle between an adaptor plate and an auto bell... really totally unimpressed with it, but its all we've got):
Image

And after major stuffing about getting enough bolts in it to keep me happy we trial-fitted the motor in the engine bay:
Image

And an underneath shot of clearances... this motor was made for a solid axle Hilux:
Image

While doing this we discovered the reason for vibration in the driveline... Toyota people will spot the obvious straight away... how long ago does it look like there were bolts in the gearbox mount???
Image

So, a 4WD Stuff crossmember is in order (well, 2 bolts were in order, but this gives 75mm (3") more clearance under the crossmember, so its a good option.
Image

Clearance gained:
Image

...and bolting it in place, the host for this evening - the lovely Rik, sporting a rather last-season polarfleece and an overworked ratchet :) (Oh, the jack isn't holding anything all you OSH wannabies... its tipping the motor slightly to level it in the engine bay - see the third pic to see why)
Image

After fitting up the engine it because apparent the existing engine mounts were not even close, but the diesel engine mounts could, and would have to be, used in place of the Supra ones which were too long, and one of them was stripped apart from the last 1/2 turn of thread... so out with the angle grinder...
Image

And back in with the motor to check where things needed to go, angles for engine mounts, clearances for the rad, etc. And I swear this motor fits better than a 5M supra... its just compact and tidy like the 5M isn't... check all the free space on the passenger side inner guard!
Image

From the drivers side:
Image

So, thats 2 part-days down...

Tomorrow the engine mounts will get bent up and fitted and the engine will be fitted for (hopefully) the final time, with the new flywheel and clutch fitted (using a god-knows flywheel and, I believe, a 3S-GTE heavy duty clutch... I don't know too much about the conversion kit... some of its bodge, some of its unlabeled... but it was used previously in a conversion so I'm hoping and assuming it works... or Riks gonna be going north to find the guy - and I might go along for the ride... :)

Wiring? I'll post some pics of the loom... its a monster, but like all EFI looms theres only going to be small parts we need... theres no airflow meter... just a MAP sensor which will make things a little simpler, but there are a lot of plugs that go nowhere in and around the engine... yay

Day 3 to follow:... same bat channel, same bat time...

Ok, lots more pics to come, but no time... finished up at stupid o'clock in the morning after a really successful and productive day... heres a short video clip which showns the pinnacle of our achievements thus far...

Oh, and Pete... it came from up there somewhere... the 2JZ is a VERY common motor in lots of Toymotas tho... Belonged to a guy called John...

As for making another bell - I would NOT make another one like this... I've got pics to follow but the bell is a mongrel... very ugly. Another can be made tho - adaptor plate and A340 auto bell will do the trick.

Ok, sorry - gotta run as I have to go do another supra conversion... then another... then maybe I can do some work on my truck :)

Steve

my brother put the same mtr in 2dr surf with ifs that had blown 3vze,he made adapter plate to hook to diesel 5 spd, man it is some fun to drive, from 3 grand to 8 it pulls like a school boy,not used for serious 4x4ing but good on sand, dangerous on wet seal.mtr is rated at 166 kw standard with std intake and small factory exhaust and cat so must be good for 175ish freed up, look forward to hearing more cheers vaughan

Its the standard diesel rad with the bottom fitting turned a little to help line the hoses up. I have a proper Supra one coming - but this one should work ok... if it runs hot we'll make the Supra one fit.

The fan is a Celica A/C pusher that Rik scavenged from a wrecking yard jammed between the grille and the rad... have a second one if its not enough... theres probably 15-20mm clearance between the front pully and the rad fins, so no room there.

Oh, and as for the clip - Windows movie maker... dead simple - took about 5 minutes to make the clip - and I figured you guys would enjoy it so it was worth taking 5 minutes out...

More pics coming today - watch this space.

I did this install on my LN130 12 months ago.
http://strx7.250x.com/index.htm

Anyone who has seen the sprint cars at baypark this past season can testify how well it goes and how it sounds.

in the next couple of months I'll be attaching a healthy sized turbo to it and i'm hoping for close to 400HP at 12psi.

These motors are really torquey down low, and you can happily cruise around town in 4th and 5th doing 1200rpm at 50kph.
Passing lanes on the open road are just so enjoyable, cut back to 3rd open it up and leave everyone for dead.

as someone else mentions, they are a better conversion than an M series engine, ever seen a dead JZ? these days can you still find a GOOD 5MGE or 7MGE?

Don't write the ol M series off, I just sent an LN130 home with a mint 7M from a Cressida.. its the buzz per $$$ that makes em good.

The cheapest I've seen a 2JZ is $650, I've bought whole 5M Supras for $150.. I got my 7MGE for $150.. Remember you need to add the cost for flywheel and adapter... that can be cheaper for the M series..

I agree with you the 2JZ is a wicked engine and for under $1000 its a bargin but don't write of the M series, theres alot of Toys with em and the owners love em.

A point to add is I've seen gutless 2L diesels go further than Lexus V8's, theres still the rest of the package to consider !

Yep, the M's are getting to giveaway status now, even 7Ms are cheap as chips... and like Mike said, its the total cost of conversion...

An M with a manual bell can be fitted in a few hours, wired in about one more and driving out the door all tidied away in 1 or 2 days all up if you go hard at it... How long and how much did you spend on your 2JZ conv? Yes, the motor is cheap but the conversion parts are not... still, this motor came from a manual car so the computer is stock - no auto crap to worry about.

Still, nice conversion STRX7... you did it the hard way by the looks of things, but its good to see something different... well done.

Took Riks for a strop down the road the other morning when we got it finished and finally found all the loose vacuum hoses that were making it run like a piece of ass and causing it to use more fuel than the exxon valdez disaster left lying about - it kicks ass... nice to drive, good torque, whel spinning if you try (remember, thats 35" Maxxis wheelspinning 8) ). Bastard even managed to pull away from me on the open road at 100km/h - I used to whizz past him so fast he had to txt to see if that was me that just went by :P

Oh, heres a few pics of that mongrel bellhousing/flywheel... also found the clutch slave cylinder this guy sent with the bell was rooted... the bore is corroded and the seals are naffed... spent about 2 hours getting the thing finally bled up (also one designed for the other side, so the bleeder was at the bottom, fun to bleed that way, eh Rik?) to find it just went soft and spongy after the first drive.

The adaptor plate, see the random munching thats been done with a drill bit to get it to fit:
Image
Image

Clutch fork hole, very tidy  :
Image
Image

All in all, not a product I would recommend... still, its running.

Ok, so on the lighter side, anyone whos been to the shed lately would probably know you could spend hours in there looking for a bolt or two if you lost them... and lost them Rik did... spent a combined total of around 6 manhours looking for 2 missing flywheel bolts - the only things holding us up from getting the engine in the hole for the final time.

We took the flywheel off to get it out of the way while sorting the engine fit, and Rik put all the bolts on the lid of his socket set - no prob, thats where all the bolts go, makes em easy to find... normally

anyway... heres the flywheel bolted up, with the minor exception of 2 said threaded friends:
Image

Now after looking everywhere about 47 times, swearing more than even I do and generally getting very pissed off, it was called a night with Rik having to go shopping the next day for 2 bolts... and when he got back we bolted up the flywheel properly, fitted it in the hole and Rik went underneath to start bolting up the engine to the bellhousing... and at this point I wuold like to refer you to Exhibit A: A Previous photo showing rik bolting something else up on his truck... something, if you recall, that had 2 missing bolts...
Image

And if you look closely here, theres a striking similarity between the bolts used and the bolts lost :P :
Image

 And my messy shed got the blame for the missing bolts

Still, in Riks defence, I'm betting that your shed devoured the 2 bolts that were supposed to be for the gear box x member eh Steve? 8)
