Bolts

Post by nz4x4 »

Just a quick question on bolts.

After reading on the web it seems that American grade 5 bolts are the same strength as metric 8.8. Is this correct? And if so can the grade 5 American bolt (imperial) be substituted for the 8.8? (winch comp specs?)

Here is a link I found requarding strengths. (bolts are 1/2")

Or have i missed some thing major out and embarassing myself?

I was thinking more along the lines of tow hooks, winch mountings, etc.

Your right , but because the 1/2" has a larger x20%? cross section, it must be a stronger bolt. Its the shear strenght that is important when fitting tow hooks.
