Once your hood pins go all rusty, buy some stainless 12mm bolts from Bunnings and cut the head off to replace. Same size, fit the same way but don't rust!!!!

dammit, im sure i wrote out a big post and it flippin disappeared.

Got two of these sets

for $22 per set with FREE SHIPPING which cant be beat- its just not worth starting from scratch and trying to find the cable, clips, making the pins and the rings.. Hopefully they don't rust through the chrome too quickly  and good idea on the bolts.

Will post some pics tonight possibly. I'm off to the profile cutters to get some stuff made.

I decided fairly early on that I was taking a completely minimalist approach to the interior. I want things to be as clutter free as possible to aid with things like cleaning, maintenance, weight and coooooool factor.

So- The things not going to have a dashboard. . This big ugly piece of pipe has gone
Image

and i made this yesterday to go in its place.
Image

Image

Today i borrowed a mates air compressor (thanks pal... but my fcuk is it useless at running air tools) and cleaned off all the unused brackets and tabs
Image
And yes there are a few holes there that need welding up

I then had a sit in the truck with the bar in place and realized that it was a little too low and too far back- the bracket going down and forwards to the steering column was going to end up being pretty damn ugly- so new brackets were drawn up and will be taken to the profile cutter on monday once he is back at work. I just cant be bothered making them again,

I'll then sit it in place and with my gauges mark out where everythings going to go. I have 50mm water temp and oil pressure, 60mm EGT and 80mm boost gauges on the way.
The pipe will then be scalloped around half way through so that the gauge cups sit down in the pipe pointing at the driver like they are supposed to be there.

I also went over the engine bay with the air chisel (which is now my all time most favorite air tool) and used it to remove all of the annoying plastic clips and zipties that were still in there as well as a whole lot of sealant and crap. Air chisels are AWEEEEESOME at removing factory tar sound deadening material. It just blasts it off with bits exploding free in every direction. I wish i had more to remove :(

i had all my fuses, relays, switches, gagues in a console between seats, brought a stork that did everything for lights, indicators, to get around the legalities of having to have a heater in the vehivle seeing it was a lux was to put a rear demister that goes on the windscreen, all up you can save maybe 50kg's, max

Re: GQ project.

Post by flyingbrick »

thanks dude. I'm using the little rear heater box from the center console to provide some warmth and demisting. Don't think the lux has one on the rear window so i'll have to sus one out.... Although it is within wiping distance anyway

Where did you buy this generic stalk from? I've got the lux stuff there that i can use (just have to sit down with a multimeter and work out what all the pins do in the plug) but if there is an easier way im all for it.

Wipers ETC will be fine on a toggle switch.

I saw this car in a magazine quite a few years back (twin vr6 engined vw) and have always loved it. Gauges on a bar.

but yeah aside from that there are the other reasons mentioned above in a previous post. i like simple.

yeah bro. Saw what you were doing in there the other day. to say that i was impressed is an understatement. :D

BTW should be able to get most of the rest of my cool shit over the next two weeks. Glass guards, steel wheels, replacement doors, W2A IC, etc etc etc. Its all due to be collected/delivered etc and im EXCITED.

Paint is not going to stay all white. R/C stadium trucks of the 90's are my inspiration. 8) . Now trying to crank some favors out of people I know for a place to spray :-D

Re: GQ project.

thanks guys. Man an internal cage would be rad. An exo would be even cooler.

the sad fact is that i simply will not have room i there for an internal one as far as width etc goes because of the tunnel. I'm sure I'll be able to heat up and bash in some of the tunnel to give more seat room but there is not realy all that much clearance between trans and sheet metal for this to happen.

Helping vvega atm at the workshop. I'm about to grind the shit out of hi chassis and then attack it with the air chisel. I'm looking forwards to that part.

In terms of paint sceme im tinking more along the lines of two tone... white and fluroescent orange or maybe fluro green/yellow. Orange bottom fading into the white upper half. No sharp edges. Retro as shit. Cabs already white and fairly nice so all i have to spray on is the other color.

Had some nice presents waiting for me at the parents when i went to visit on fri. autogauge gauges and some temp sendor adaptors. so cool 8)

-Nathan

ps. I shot the shit out of a pair of glocks today. Fcuking cool.

How are you going to get of with the internal projection rules with no dash when you come to cert it? I thought long and hard about leaving mine out but canned it to make it easier to certify.

The bar is very far away from the drivers and passengers and well out of the way. I'll wrap it in foam noodle infront of the passenger.

It makes the interior so spacious

And yeah helping wayne. been here (im at waynes right now) helping the last 3 nights. like 5 hours a night
