lsd diff or not

Post by new2zukes »

well i got my diff out of my surf housing and looked at the ratio it ended up being 39 crownwheel and 8 pinon which is 4.875 (4.88) then thought to myself i didnt think they made an lsd in 4.88 in the surfs. so took a couple of pics and thought id ask to see if anyone can shed some light on this. also it has a bit of red paint on the crownwheel teeth if that means anything.
and also if anyone knows how to shim the lsd some info on that would be much apreciated as ive never pulled a diff apart before. i did read last night on one of the 4wd forums that if you try put the rear lsd diff head in the front of your truck you need to shorten the axle which seemed a bit odd to me. anyhow here are some pics.

well pulled the diff apart which was real easy actually. doesnt look lsd to me as there is no spring in there at all, i think the diff housing said lsd but someone changed the diff ratio to 4.88.
here are some pics of it the funny thing was that if i spun 1 wheel forward the other went forward too but didnt have much tension.

Looks like its a G144
G = 8 inch crown
14 = 4.875 ratio
4 = 4 spider.

Nah it doesn't mean its an LSD. it just means that its easier to spin the pinion gear and drive shaft than it is to spin the spider gears and other axle in the other direction.

To do the test correctly you need to have the truck in gear or put some resistance into the drive shaft somehow.

If its an LSD and you put it in gear or lock the drive shaft you will feel some resistance when turning one wheel- until you reach the breakaway TQ and the other wheel will start to rotate in the opposite direction as per normal.

thats my understanding anyway.

different diffs have different setups,

you do not have a LSD there, it is a 4 spider open diff,

cheers

Ive not confirmed it 100% but apparantly you can tell how many spiders a diff is by the number of "fins" on the side of the diff head.

thanks all for input this actually makes things easyer as i dont have to swap things around so much i am getting a m8 to weld the diff up solid so it is locked he did my diff on my zuke and that works awsome.
