Oil filters and pressure

Post by Hombrey »

Guys I've read a few posts about cold starts and oil pressure on a TD42 non turbo. Someone said it was taking about 7 seconds for the oil light to go out from cold. I have the same problem and it takes about that long. Was a thread about engine types, one uses both the same filters and one uses two different types. How do you tell? Will be looking at filter change shortly and want to ensure if I can fix this problem I get it right rather than just buying two more filters the same. Will also look for a guage as my pressure guage sits just under 4 hot and drops to under 2 at idle.

Mines the same since changing the oil must be a little thinner than whatever was in it when i brought it. Used the same filters. As far as im aware, the models that use a bypass filter have a different thread so its not actually possible to screw the wrong filter on. Tho i didnt try this. And filter part numbers listed were different to what was on it

Some have a bypass in the filter(filters different serial no.) By memory its the one closest to the front of engine and others use the same filter with no bypass. I was told that the TD42T use the bypass but these are also used on the TD42 I think it depends on the year and month of the vechile. If you can take them off to be sure before getting new ones. My oil pressure sits at 2 when hot a mechanic told me this is normal for them but my mates one sits at just over 4 both after oil change. I also thought my gauge was faulty but have'nt got around to replacing it.

How about oil pressure from cold? Take a while to get pressure? On mine both the guage and the light align pretty closely i.e. 5 - 7 seconds before they move/go out. I'd assumed it just took a while to get pressure (like the pressure sender is a way from the pump) but would rather see if its normal or not.

My oil pressure starts at 5 goes there almost straight away. And about 2-3 seconds for oil light to go off. Is this after the oil change?

The oil pressure senders on the Safari's seem to be crap, I never even bothered looking at mine in the end, always showed poor pressure, the new one went well for a whole year, then showed bugger all pressure too

In my surf i notice i get better fuel economy after an oil change...is good for about 4000 km...then is about 10% down for the next 1000km.

Ok thanks guys will be changing oil and filters today. Fuel economy is a whole different story. Have not run a full tank through it but based on the guage at about 1/2 tank I've done about 220ks. If the guage is close that means I'll get about 450 to a tank. Seems low but I've set the trip and when I next fill I'll see whats its doing to the litre. Admittedly most of my driving is short trips or low ratio 4wd. I'd assume thats heavier on diesel.

noticed a problem with mine the other day, taking 4-6 seconds to register any pressure. Coming home from a trip on saturday it started reading a higher then normal pressure, when the motor was off and ignition on it was reading a pressure. On the sender units there is a breather tube, I gave it a clean and no more oil presure gauge problems. and my oils and filters are only 2000K's old so I kne it wasn't and oil issue, and still in good nick.

Thanks Guys. Replaced oil and filters today and oil pressure at idle sits just above zero hot and 2 cold. At 2000 revs sits just over 2 hot or cold. I need a guage :D

It should be reading just over 2 at idle and just under 4 at revs.

An old thread I know, but has anyone fitted a new sender and still has low'ish oil pressure?

I know the gauges and senders are dodgy but i'm thinking it might be the regulator relief valve on the cooler, or the oil pump relief valve...anyone replaced these?

(With new oil and filters my gauge sits around 2/idling, hovers around 2-3ish when hot and revving).

Cheers
