New toy ... 4wd Not working .. 70 series Cruiser wth e hubs

Post by crizpy »

hey all .. just got a new toy to tidy up ...
Its a pretty rare LWB 5 cylinder diesel 1992 cruiser
aqparently had a fully reconditioned engine 3 years ago .. im trying to hunt the paper work .. seems to run really well ..
just going to tidy up paint and get a few things going again ..
aside from that ..
its got 150 k's
wof and reg
prev owner of 10 years ... has moss growing out of the roof gutters

main thing i need to work out is 4x4 will not engage
it has electric locking hubs .. when you press them they flash and then the light goes solid .. make me think maybe they are working ..
i do not get The 4wd Light Light Up ...

i do have spare manual hubs that May Fit from a 70 series ..
Doent yet know how to install them .. But im sure i may be able to work it out
If its looking towards this being the prob ...

i did jack the front up and turn the wheels and got no driveshaft turning ... Still doesnt explain why the hub light flashes then goes solid .. would think if they are not working the light would keep flashing ...
Would the 4wd Light Only come on once that Front drive shaft is rotated? hence why no 4wd light ?

thansk for help

also ..... If the hubs were Locked like The light says .. front jacked up ... am I right in thinking . That driveshaft Definatly be turning.( or trying to as rears on ground )

hubs locked = driveshaft turning ?
meaning its definatly my hubs?

ditch the electrics!! do an OLDBLUE conversion or fit manuals.. you will need a spacer made to fit them thou probably....

Don't replace the Hubs IMHO!
The factory hubs are stronger than aftermarket ones. Even more so if you have to fit spacers (most likely) as you end up with longer bolts, bigger shear force action and more joint faces, thus all leading to problems.
Either a wire has come adrift or more likely you have a gooey brush issue or faulty brushes.

Check http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/ ... 22&t=19427 and see Oldblue's and my posts.

To check if each hub is working, jack up that side of the front axle / wheel only. Then spin that wheel and see if the d/shaft rotates. Then do the same on the other side having lowered the 1st side. If you don't have a front auto un-locker (unlikely) this system will show if one or both hubs.

Also try after having engaged low range as this operates the vacuum system to engage the drive shaft in a slightly different way (I think) to pushing the 4wd ehgage button.
Note if 4wd is engaged the d/shaft won't turn if you attempt to spin the wheel and the hub is engaged. If it does the issue is with the transfer case engagement system.

the hub lock light is no indercation that the hubs have enguaged Press the hub lock button, you should hear the electric motors turning for about 4/5 sec DON"T press the H4 button, get under truck and try turning the drive shaft, it should turn a small amount then the hubs will lock, if drive shaft turns then the hubs have problems. just as a matter of interest my conversion will be cheaper than the rings kit that you will need to use to fit the manual hubs

Could be the start of not knowing if the hubs are in or out, untill you look inside the hubs, do one more thing and remove the main hub bodys and check the carbons , may just need cleaning, (the slip ring / carbons), don't use mineral grease on the slip-ring use electrcial grease only. When refitting , use a thin wire to hold the carbons in the retracted position, then remove the wire after fitting

ok great thanks i had a look .. Looks like could do with a clean . I also need to adjust the front wheel bearings they seem to have a little play in them .
behind the main hub body there is 3 Screws with that difrent hex style on them .. Do i Undo those .. and is there a bearing adjusting nut under there somewhere?
thankyou
