need help-hilux front diff

Post by monaro427 »

need some help, trying to take my front diff out of my surf, book does not tell me much, can anyone here explain in easy terms, how it comes out. do you have to take all the front wheel bearings out and do it that way, once i know how to do it once then the next time should be easier. need to put my lsd from the rear into the front and then put my lokka in the front diff for the rear, trying to get it all done before the west coast trip,HELP :( :?:

Yeap remove free wheeling hubs, calipers, hubs with disc off. Then unbolt the stub axle etc then pull the CVs and axles out thru the swivel housing.
Then you can remove the diff head

8) if its a solid axle heres a good quick way "copyed from the Pirate site"

I wonder how many of you guys out there are aware of the "Camo Method" of replacing Birfields on a Toy axle:

Pull locking hub cap and remove snap ring.
Unbolt seal/felts on back of knuckle.
Unbolt brake caliper and tie out of the way. (can be skipped if you have long brake lines)
Unbolt steering arm. (leave bottom knuckle cap alone)
Pull entire outer knuckle assembly off of axle.
Sawp in your parts.
Put it back together.

It's a big-time shortcut since you don't need to mess with the 54mm socket or wheel bearings.

Just remember to turn your berfield (cage part of CV) so that the flats match up with the top and bottom flats on your swivel housing (you'll see when you've got the axle open  ) otherwise you'll never get it out
to clear the diff you won't need to pull the axle shafts all the way out 10 cm each side should clear it

If its the IFS let us know and we'll throw up details for that  best trick for that is as Steve's tag says.... a 9" grinder

Hi vaughan, start a new thread for questions like that rather than thread-jacking someone elses... but a 2.4D Toyota will most likely have a 4.5 ratio diff.

Steve

PS: When you use that "camo" method, be very careful not to damage the inner axle seal when you are removing and refitting the assembly.

Its a good trailside method when you've blown a CV and need to get going in a hurry... not a good method to use otherwise
