In that photo you are missing the pipe between the turbo and the intake, a turbo engine fuel pump boost pressure compensator.

Just from the quick look, what are you looking at the turbo to provide? if you want to run relyabily then you will need to look at:

Exhaust Temp (pyro)
Larger Radiator
5l radiator fan
Tuning
Oil pickup and return, poss oil pressure gauge
Oil return line plumbing into the oil pan
thicker head gasket

Nothing that cannot be done but it is a little more involved than a bolt on.

Just my 2c and as 2c are no longer currency it is rounded down to nothing.
Legal disclaimer: Any information I may have provided is worth exactly what you paid me for it.

i want the turbo as a quick easy way of getting more power out of the 3l.

will a 2lt boost pressure compensator work?
and will there still be overheating problems with a 2.5" exhaust from the turbo or will i still need the bigger fan etc

cheers that really helped because i a bit of a newbie with turbos

The 2LT boost compensator should work - I have heard of this being attached to the existing 3l diesel pump, but I am not sure if it is a DIY thing. If not the 2lt pump may work, with the only likely issue being the timing of the injection. I think the plunger size is 10mm on both pumps, but you can check this by the tag on the side of the pump.

I recently sold one of these from the first version of the 2LT, and there is a difference between the exhaust manifold on the early and later 2LT's just in case you did not know - early does not fit and from memory the 89 on versions match (bit of a guess).

Just looking at that pic I think that the turbo may be water cooled as well, if so you will need feed and return pipes. There are specific housings which attach to a 2LT to allow this, so hopefully the seller has these as well.

From memory you might require a cert due to power increase - but I am sure there are guys who have done this and would know for sure.

From what I have heard you can't get too enthusiastic with the 3l's as they do not have the uprated big ends and oil squirters to deal with the extra power/heat. Oh and an intercooler is an easy way to help keep it all cool which is essential on turbo installs.

I would be asking questions about the amount of axial play in the turbo, and checking the state of the turbine wheel fins - if its got hot apparently they start to melt on the very tips...

Good luck
