Out of the barn

Post by mike »

I was back in Tauranga only one day and decided to go get the landy. Rolled out to the barn with a Tranzit van and a car trailer. Got stuck just backing the trailer up to the barn! Tranzit van was abit light in the rear end and all the rain here lately didnt help the road tyres. The slope was only about 3 degrees but on wet grass. The landrover hadnt been started for over 2 years so I didnt even try to go down that avenue.

Cut a long story short ended up towing the trailer out with rope and then the tranzit van with me mums car. Had a very long strop to the landrover from the tranzit van and then a very long rope from my mums car to the tranzit van. Finally got the landy to the trailer and winched it on and then proceeded to drive up the shingle driveway still being towed by me mum. Slowly the van and trailer started to move forwards. Thank god for mums and GF's that can drive big transit vans, I say. 8O

After two years in a barn:

Rats had eaten everything plastic!
Rat crap everywhere!!
Battery fluid completely gone! -> New Battery, old one being tested
Clutch rusted to flywheel. Freed by acclerating and de-acclerating with clutch in. Engine started, First turned motor over to let oil pressure build up or flow through. Then it took about 3 times with glow plugs on. :D :D

Rats had eaten through the diff breather for front axle and the rest of it nearly rapped itself round the fan belt!!

Diesel mysteriously disapperead just like the clutch fluid. :?
Tyres still inflated at 35psi!

Steering is very tight and heavy. :?

Bit of work coming up. I think I might take it for a WOF to see what needs fixing.

Hehehe, bugger!! At least you've got something to play with now though... and it's a bit easier to find parts for a crusty old landrover in NZ than it is in Germany!!! :D

When you get it going you had better test drive it down to Wellington and we'll take it for a spin.

Yeah I would say so, which means that if you don't drive your 4wd its still gonna need fixing so you are so much better off driving it and fixing it rather than thinking about driving and fixing it. Get that :?: :? . The only difference is the tyres dont wear out!

well it's going now mark, but only in 2wd  Now I see these 4wds running around the city and never venturing offroad and I think what a waste of a front diff. hmm maybe they wouldnt notice it missing

Anyone has or know of a rover 90 diff 4.3 near them please drop me a line: desperate here :P

Update

I took the old girl for her WOF,

Failed on:
    siezed brake cylinder
    cracked brake hose
    worn steering joint
    no sun visor
    no rear tail lights

All easily fixed except the mission of trying to break the ball joints without a ball joint breaker :? Luckily someone had welded the battery holder just above it and a wedged cole chisel and wd40 and a huge dolly later all was free :D

Now I have the warrant I'm just waiting on the 4.3 diff to come up from wellie next week for all to be in good running order. Well for the next few days till I break something again

Can't watch the game it's to stessfull so I'll type this up instead.

Thought I would put the front diff in today, the only thing that is stopping me offroading at the moment.

No probs getting the old one out and the funny thing is about 4 teeth fell out with the oil....... 8O 8O very strange. Considering there are no teeth missing at all from the diff I just removed. Trust me I tripple checked :? :? Think it must have been the old diff that blew apart in there and maybe these teeth went down the axil towards the swivel joints. :?:

Of course I wouldn't be able to get a diffhead gasket anywhere on a sat afternoon and probably not at all in Tauranga anyway. So it sits there at the moment waiting on a gasket. Mean while I will fit the CB and try to get my second tank pump going :)

Diff is in, tested the 4wd, up on furgus's farm tracks and let me say what a place that guy has 8O perfect for a 4wd nut like him!

Only probs now is the fuel pump siezed - have to get it out first
and my brakes are doing really weird shit! Normal the brakes are quite good, but when sitting or parked for a few minutes and then go to use them they are real hard and slowely move down to engage and then come right after awhile ie back to normal :?

I'm thinking its the servo unit or the master cylinder seal sticking. any other ideas before I go ripping stuff apart

Well they came right after I noticed my fan belt was very very loose after my battery went flat from not charging! Since the Alternator wasnt spinning there was no suction for the power assist for the brakes.

Today I was tracing the cause for why my lights would not turn off. And here I was thinking landys have simple wiring till I got under the dash where the speedo and stuff is. To my horror I found a rats nest from when it was sitting in the barn for 2 years. Of all the places they had to nest there and as if that wasnt bad enough they thought they would eat wires to make room!!! 8O

I put it all back togeather and now my lights turn on and off but they are stuck on high beam :( Tomorrows job.

Those japas are looking real good in the car yards
