I looked at taking up the NZ rights to them - decided not to after figuring that I needed a NZ sell price of more than NZ$500 a pair

I have been meaning to do some experiments at making a Thermoformed disposable variety - must remind our factory manager to make the samples so that I can try them at the beach.

I contacted the guys that make them in Brissy to ask about how it performs in NZ conditions. They sent me two sets to trial, arrived yesterday. They get lots of enquiries from NZ but have not product tested it over here. I intend to test in pea shingle, westcoast mud, central otago bog and our good old sth island snow. I think they will work real good over here and only a matter of time before Kiwis start using them. Will keep you's updated on how it goes. All the video footage I get of it in action here will go to the supplier for marketing purposes, and I get to keep the product for free.

Well we have started product testing this product for the Aussie guys that make them in NZ conditions. I am suitably impressed. We headed over to the Westcoast and went to our usual tracks, found some interesting difficult places. All vehicles are moditied and twin locked. When we needed to winch, we used the maxtrax instead and no winching required. They work so well, that I ended up bending the steering tierod on an tree stump we did not see when the wheels got traction on the maxtrax, so much was the bend that both front wheels were pointing out at 45* left and right. They seem to be pretty strong as at times there was nothing under them to support them and they took the weight of a fully laden safari. Will keep you all updated as we test some more.

So whats the verdict? Tried some in sand and thought they were the ducks nuts, but are they worth the $$$?

Is there a NZ dealer that is willing to drop the price so we can afford them?

They look good but TOO expensive & too big..they would take up alot of room inside vehicle.
Im sure there are cheaper things that will do the same job.

Been thinking of buying some of that real hard plastic edging made from recycled plastic & trying that

rip up some of the plastic matting/flooring stuff from some kiddies playground. I hear that stuff works mean.

I looked at these in auckland (some 4x4 arb place in papakura) and couldn't believe the price. IIRC was over 600$ but could be wrong.

I never had much faith in them but that video further up the part where the truck towing the trailer is slightly moving forward and the guy chucks the track in and out it pops has me convinced.

It's one of those 'I have $XXXX what should I get? Tyres, lockers, winch, maxtrax?' situations.

I imagine when you're in the shit by yourself and use them they would surely pay for themselves.

Seem to recall the nz 4x4 mag doing a test on them last year or so.

I tried them and they work too. Tried in mud and sand. In sand easy to use and remove afterwards. But mud they were packed solid and heavy. Wasn't keen putting back inside vehicle.
Saw photos of some of the vehicles carrying them in the malaysian RFC as well.
Couple of outfits selling them in NZ, ARB network one of them. Don't come cheap especially if you take up the storage bag offer as well, but if venturing out on your own can be rather useful.

Apperently you can carry some sacks around and when you get stuck Full them up with whatever your in e.g sand,snow,mud and chuck them under your wheels and its basicly the same thing.
But ive never tryed it so i have no idea if it works.

I posted the post back in 08 as Pathfinder67. Of the four maxtrax all four are now broken. Although they do work, they can take a hammering in the real hard stuff. I broke them in the chasm and down on the cattle track at Haast. Pain in the are heavy when covered in mud and there is nowhere to store them on swb safari unless you have a roofrack. personally I would invest in other recovery devices. Must try the sack thing out as I always have about three in the truck at once.

yup i have a set, great in the sand, work ok in the mud ( in the right conditions that is)

they work as they should, i now carry them on my roof-racks rather than inside esp if they are muddy.... We managed to break a corner off one at costa using it as a ramp, would've been ok if we re-posistioned it b4 each 4x4 went over it!

overall they are cheaper than a winch and bar!!!

Dont most people just use sticks / wood / what they can find laying about to chuck under the wheels anyhow?

I like the idea of the sack filled with mud / pea gravel etc.. will give that a crack sometime

Looks good but $500 seems steep for some stiff nylon knotted rope

maybe im just cheap

Found these while having a trawl. $100 cheaper than maxtrax which they also sell now.
