Hey there
Have just bought a 1990 Hilux Surf with the 3vz petrol engine and manual box.
Got it for a pretty good price, but it needs a few lil things sorting on it.
1) It has a very low idle and stalls while idling, and ocassionally decelerating coming up to the lights. Guy i bought it off thought it was something to do with 2 of the vacuum solenoids next to the brake master cylinder as they had the plastic nipples broken off. i replaced them today but no change in the idle. Any other ideas?
2) Oil pressure gauge doesn't seem to work at all, is there an easy way to test if the gauge is faulty? or maybe the sender?
3) Switch for rear window in centre console doesnt work, 2 of the wires are showing 12 volts so figure its probably the switch thats stuffed, is this a common problem? Also think the rear window motor may be stuffed as its very slow to go up with the key.
4) Does anyone have a writeup on changing the cv boots for this model as 3 need doing, or know somewhere reputable to get them done in auckland?
Sorry bout all the questions, but its 1st 4wd ive owned, have no problems finding my way round most cars but 4wds a bit different.
Any help appreciated

Answered what i can for you.

Replace it with an aftermarket one

motor for the rear is same as all the windows so easy to replace, common problem with center switch , get a wiring diagram as their is a relay controller for the rear door behind passenger side storage compartment in the rear which could be faulty as well.

pop the little caps off the end of the axles , undo the bolt , take off the flange plate and remove axle circlip , drop out the front diff and pull the axles / CV's out. split the CVs and replace the boots. if that sounds like gobblety gook then get some one to do it for you, but will cost $$ as is quite time consuming.

should be an idle control screw where the throttle cable attaches to the throttle body try winding it up a little. could simply be that someone has messed with it and wound it down
2) Oil pressure gauge doesn't seem to work at all, is there an easy way to test if the gauge is faulty? or maybe the sender?
before spending any money find the sender on the block (passengers side from memory but could be wrong) and check that the wire hasn't just fallen off, it did on mine
3) Switch for rear window in centre console doesnt work, 2 of the wires are showing 12 volts so figure its probably the switch thats stuffed, is this a common problem? Also think the rear window motor may be stuffed as its very slow to go up with the key.
pull the switch apart and give all the contacts a good clean could fix it for free. often a quick fix. most of the windows are slow but lubing the runners might help a bit there too.
4) Does anyone have a writeup on changing the cv boots for this model as 3 need doing, or know somewhere reputable to get them done in auckland?
not too hard to do but a bit of a pain none the less. normally quite reasonably priced to pay someone to do it . depends what money value you put on your time
Cheers Pete

These vehicles are referred to as 2nd generation 4runners in the USA, they are there in huge numbers in the V6 version, search using those names if you're looking for info for your vehicle.
Also some of the 1st generation 4runner stuff on the net can be useful as well.

Ok have had a go at a couple of things today.
Found the oil pressure sender didnt have the wire attached under the rubber boot so once that was attached now have a working oil pressure gauge
The idle problem i have discovered is that the bolt on the distributor used for adjusting the timing is loose and i can move the distributor by hand.
The guy i bought it off has recently replaced the ignition leads, distributor cap and rotor so figure he didnt tighten it afterwards. Will just have to get a timing light i guess then adjust it.
Gonna have a go at the rear window stuff this arvo and sort the CV boots out later on.
Also gonna try and find out why my aircon seems to work but doesnt blow cold, thinking gas may be nearly all gone?
