4x4 National Park March 2010
The National Park four wheeling weekend is on again on 6/7 March with The Park Travellers Lodge as the base and providing event support.
For NZFWDA members, The Park is offering a 20% discount on accommodation. They offer a wide array of accommodation options to suit most budgets.
http://www.the-park.co.nz
For 2010 the money raised will go to the local playcentre in National Park.
The format is relaxed, with plans at present indicating a trip to Whakahoro on the Whanganui River behind National Park that will provide some 2 hours of four wheeling in a remarkable valley with a unique history and the options to try other outdoor activities. (We will do a morning group and an afternoon group, so that our local landowner can act as a guide and storyteller)
Saturday evening will feature a special event buffet dinner
which will be $25 per person inclusive of barbecue buffet dinner including dessert and a complimentary beer or glass of house wine from Spiral Bar.
Sunday will take participants towards Whakapapa and onto a local farm to tackle a variety of trails through bush and paddocks. The plan is that it will be easy to chose when you want to set off again for home.
The vehicle trip fee for each day is $30 and goes to the playcentre.
When you book at The Park, tell them you want to register for the 4x4 event and then just be there ready to go at 9.00am on Saturday (with your trip fee) bookings@the-park.co.nz or 0508 CROSSING
If you don't wish to stay at The Park, then that's fine, just email access@nzfwda.co.nz and register. You can still book for the dinner too if you wish.
This concept was well received in 2009 and is sure to be great again this year, so move quickly now and get your bookings made.

We'd be delighted if everyone was a member of NZFWDA, as it is only $30 per year, but since this is fundraising for a good cause, it won't be mandatory to be a member to take part. (Mind you, the accommodation 20% discount for members could make that membership worthwhile)

Change of plan
After a weekend down at National Park checking route options, we have decided that the proposed run to Whakahoro on the Whanganui River will not be part of the weekend's four wheeling.
The team down there have been great and we enjoyed the exploring that we did, but the 'papa' type country is too unpredictable to safely run the type of four wheeling that will be expected. Wet weather would close many of the options.
This does not mean that we are stuck without local alternatives and it will mean that all four wheeling will be much closer to National Park.
Don't forget that time is ticking away and there are excellent accommodation options at The Park Travellers Lodge. They have 'backpacker' type rooms and a do-it-yourself kitchen if that's your style.

Re: 4x4 National Park March 2010
There are some posts on here that suggest people are going to join us at National Park. I've not yet had anyone confirm that.
For planning purposes it would be good to know fairly shortly please. access@nzfwda.org.nz

Re: 4x4 National Park March 2010
It's not too late yet to register for this event but don't delay too long.... it's only a week away. The Department of Conservation have granted the event access to some new trails (well they are old roads really) through a remote area of Tongariro Forest that normally has no public access.
These are trips that shouldn't terrify the passengers but if it's wet there will be some essential changes to the planned main route.
Book accommodation at The Park Travellers Lodge in National Park or if you don't intend to stay there, then register with access@nzfwda.org.nz
