3.8 V6 hilux electric fan

Post by mudnutz »

What sort of electric fan do guys run with the commodore V6. MIne is an aftermarket one 400 mm wide assumably repco or supercheap. Engine runs very hot and boils regularly so im wondering if a different fan might sort this problem out. Also am running standard LN 65 diesel radiator in good condition. Anyone out there had similar problems?

did you not get the commy V6 fan with the engine

they are faaarking awesome units

I had one on my ol 40, running a 350 through a 2F radiator

worked a treat

mine was set up to pull as opposed to most folk setting theres up to push air through

those elcheapo after market fans are not worth a nob of dog shit imho. I have/had a 16" one on the fee8 and it was useless. The volume they shift is pathetic when compared to a factory unit.

I use a 3 core diesel hilux one in mine and the guy i bought it off moved one of outlet pipes so they are on the same side leaving one side cold most of the time, so those fans work awesome!! Really need to get that changed around at some stage

is the fan shrouded so it pull from entire rad surface, most get a fan and strap a round should to a rectangular rad, which means you possibly only have about 50% of the rad actually seeing air flow

I wondered about a commy factory fan but i dont think there is enough room between the radiator and centre pully on the engine to fit one in. Would fitting a shroud make a difference?

do bears shit in the woods ?

do the math

assuming rad is .5m x .5m square = .25m2

fan 0.4m Dia = .125m2

.125/.25= .5 or 50% coverage

if you look at the coverage you may have 4-5 rows that are 80% covered only and then decreases rapidly to bugger all coverage, at speed this is generally ok cause of airspeed thru grill,

when slow and working the motor it will get hot.

if room is a issue pack the fan as far back as possible 10-15mm or 25mm is better and build a shroud that covers the entire radiator and brings it to the edge of the fan,

I have made shrouds that are literally a box 25mm high and a round hole on the back, that was a isuzu irmscher with a VS v6, on standard rad, no heat issues at all.

if you can get a bigger fan to fit first then do it, then build shroud to suit,

cheers

Picked up a VS commodore fan today from pic a part so i,ll remove my el cheapo fan and see if the commy one will fit. Just looking at it, it looks pretty tight between the radiator and engine. Any ideas?

i went around every parts shop in invercargill getting specs for several different aftermarket fans for the 3.8 in my surf running standard ln130 radiator.
the fan cost me nearly $400 but it is awesome! its 80mm thick, ive had the truck run hot once, i went through river and forgot to turn it off luckily the fuse done its job! it got hot before i noticed, replaced fuse and brought it down to temp nicely.
it pays to not skimp on things like fans, spend the $ and you wont regret it.

i would have gone commy fan if there was the room.

This is how I got mine to fit:

One day I'll make a shroud, but right now it doesn't need it. Using standard 1KZ radiator on factory mounts.

I havnt tried to fit the commy fan yet. It involves cutting the shroud down until it fits between the radiator and engine then some way of mounting it. I might take some measurments and try to find a bigger fan that will bolt in easier.
