rear diff pinion seal replacement LN130
hi guys am fairly new to 4wds, have noticed my rear diff pinion seal is leeking, have done a few searches on "how to", is it an easy job to replace the seal? "if it is the seal"?? have alot of mechanical knowledge just not with 4wds and solid rear ends etc
if someone could give me a guide or some pointers on how to that would be good
cheers dan

Re: rear pinion seal replacement LN130
Hi Dan, to replace pinion seal :
Mark and remove rear drive shaft: ( marks are for re-assembly )
Use a marker that won't rub off or a scribe and mark where the pinion nut is in relation to the pinion shaft, unstake the nut where it has been crushed into the grove in the pinion shaft undo the pinion nut making sure you count the number of turns, ( from memory 30mm socket ) because of the pinion bearings preload being set by a collapsible spacer between the bearings the pinion nut must be done up to the same marks as it was before undoing.
With the pinion nut removed get a container for catching about a cup of oil place under pinion and pull drive flange off the splines, oops: Mark the flange to splines. Using a pry bar or screwdriver Pryce out the old seal. Check for wear grove on the flange where the seal has been running, if not badly grooved just fit new seal , If it looks a bit deep when you get your new seal get a speedy seal kit with it and follow the instructions that will come with the kit. Fitting the new seal : clean up area of seal and shaft, run a light smear of sealant around out side of seal and push/tap seal into place, lightly smear seal and flange with oil prior to fitting flange, don't forget to line up all marks, apply sealer to end of pinion shaft(this stops oil from running down splines and out the end of the shaft) refit washer and pinion nut, do the nut up to the same marks as it was before you disassemble, it won't be very tight to get it back to the same marks then tighten an extra 20 degrees, this is something I do to make up for a little wear, re-stake the nut, use your mates screwdriver you don't want to stuff yours, refit drive shaft and lastly,
TOP UP THE F##KING OIL,
FITZY.
