Solid mounting bodys?
Has anyone ever solidly mounted their body to their chassis? Do body parts start cracking from chassis movement or is the ride just a bit too loud and harsh?
I do not have much room to play with between chassis and body as I'd like to keep things as low as possible.
Could I separate the body and chassis with something simple like a 70mm x10mm nolithane washer and expect it to be OK?
Thanks all,
Nathan.

Re: Solid mounting bodys?
I am picking you will end up with cracking issues due to chassis movement. The other issue may be that you take some of the natural chassis twist out out and it hampers articulation a bit.
Std Lux rubber mounts are only 25 odd mm, I would try and get them in there.

Re: Solid mounting bodys?
I'm solid mounting my new truck. The body mounts are also the rollcage footing and the goal is to remove the flex in the chassis. My case is probably a little more extreme than you as the rollcage is basically a spaceframe that includes the chassis as part of the space frame. The rollcage is getting fully intergrated into the cab so to tear the body mounts out would requre the rollcage to be torn apart from the body. Also each footing plate is welded to the cab on at least 2 planes, eg floor and sill or firewall. And the mount is 150x150 on the floor with 4 bolts and then the pieces up the side additional to that. (not sure if that paints a clear picture or not?)
If you aren't going to this level, then I would be very cautious of solid mounting the body as it is likely it will get torn apart. There is a huge amount of movmenet between the body and chassis in a GQ after all.
With what you are doing, I would suggest it might be easier to cut all the body mounts off the chassis and fit new ones at the hieght and location to suit the new cab. When i shifted the cab on my old GQ, that is what I did as it also removed the need for body lift blocks.
Don't rush into it otherwise you'll end up having to change it anyway. Have you talked to the guy that will do the cert and seen what he thinks?

Re: Solid mounting bodys?
if you solid mount the cab itll crack around mounting points i know of 2 "lowrider" utes where this has happened.

Re: Solid mounting bodys?
of course we are making new mounts. Its just that the chassis is so wide that the rear mounts actually will partially sit on the top of the chassis rail itself (well... on the new mount plate thats welded to the top of the chassis) so its impossible for the top of the steel mount face to sit below the chassis.
A sweet ass ORE member is sending me a set of 6 hilux body mount rubbers which im told are very low profile. they will make me happy and joyous.
I could have fit a civic body or something..
why did i not think of that beforehand.
Anyway- here are some pics.
CANT WAIT TILL THURSDAY so i have a whole day on it.
-Nathan- Had a few bourbons while out working the tools.

Re: Solid mounting bodys?
When I bent the chassis on my old truck all the body mounts got bent as well. So the factory ones aren't very strong!

Nathan, the 4WDUPGRADES HiLux that has been talked about on here and is 4sale on TM has a solid mounted cab, I have always found Mike very helpful and prepared to share knowledge so give him a call he may shed some light on it for you, but don't mention ORE as he and his business have been bagged on this forum.
I personally think that solid mounting could cause problems with cracking and even broken glass, plus your gauges will shake the needles off.
Try your local machinery ( laths, mills etc; ) supplier, you can get some very strong low profile mounts for mounting machinery that you don't want to vibrate.

Are you doing this on purpose.

Thanks for the advice. The machinery isolating mounts are a GREAT idea.
Have some lux ones on the way by the sounds of it. If they fall though I'll just suck it and use my safari rubbers.
right. I'm off to shower. There is a sexy lady coming over.

Nah that post wasn't directed at you.
Have you seen the body mounts used on Terranos? They have 4 different types but some of them are actually bolted to the chassis with 4 bolts and then the normal 1 bolt from the body through the mount. It appears they would give alot les movement but still isolate. They are quite low profile as well. They might be a good option for some of the mounts?
Anyway with the access to machining etc that you have, you have no excuse for cutting corners so we all expect to see a perfect job.

Re: Solid mounting bodys?

thanks darin.
And yeah- bent the mounts on my safari too doing the most lame shit ever- driving over a clay bank. The mounts gussets dug into the bank and dragged backwards- twisting the mount in the process.
