yeah mine fitted like shit too, bit o cutting here and there, lots of grinding and thinning here and there, and they still don't fit that well, but I didn't really care too much as they don't last that long with the abuse I give them

just heaps wider but the beauty of fibreglass is they can be trimmed to suit easy enough, dont look as good as what you and jafa have got i rekon though

yeah the ones Steve makes have the round arch, wider but square like the ones above, a 40" tire will still grind on the arch when at full lock and full stuff .... guess that's why the yanks came up with the round ones

i did for a couple weeks on t/m, shit loads of interest but no deals...

Got my throttle cable sortened. 12" shorter on the outer and 10.5" shorter on the INNER so that the travel is longer. Not impressed. Cable end was poorly formed and too big so i had to do lots of filing. Was late. Cost me 75$ (I might go into the snake shortening business... seems like easy money)

Thankfully I got the lengths bang on correct. Pedal/ throttle movement is perfect and there is adjustment left each way:mrgreen:

Bought Vvega's old hoses and bends to pumb in the radiator and started fitting those. Its not quite as easy to route them under the cab as theres not a hell of a lot of room under there past the exhaust.



I mentioned earlier that I had some sheet metal disks plasma cut to size. I riveted those over all unused grommets and holes in the inner guards and cabin.





and then undersealed everywhere that wont be touched with a welder later.

I cut some more out of the body to lower it down.. still a little more to do. Gawd its going to sit down on there nicely. far better than expected.

Last night my aluminum radiator arrived at my olds. Brackets to secure it onto the back of the cab are being made right now by collins profile cutting (hamilton)





The radiator is made for an RZ supra. I sat down with a calculator and basically worked out the volume of all readily available radiators (to fit jap cars) and grabbed the largest. I had credit at this particular store which meant I couldn't go elsewhere. Paid way too much for it. Guess i gotta take the good with the bad

Core size is 400x738x50 compared to the stock GQ's 460x740x35. Hope its OK sitting back behind the cab there with just electric fans on it. The factory radiator was absolutely screwed and buying a new steel replacement was more than this ali unit hence the upgrade.

So..
A little more wiring
rad hoses in
rad mounted
brakes bled again
a little more trimming
a bunch more holes drilled and rivnuts fitted

then its off to the welders to be finished. About bloody time

Question, have you mounted the cab to the chassis yet? You are doing a lot of plumbing, wiring and cable joining and would hate to see you need to modify something that you have already made due to having to more the cab a bit or something stupid like that....

I've used the same model radiator ( RZ Supra ) on the tray of my hilux, running 1UZ. I kept it back from the cab and run a scoop over the roof to duct air to it at motorway speeds as this is when rear mounted radiators seem to struggle with lack of airflow.

Good point. However I'd have to move the body a hell of a lot for anything to cause a problem. Its exactly where I want it as far as front-rear movement goes and only needs to come down at the front.

Sucks as i worked overtime and now cant bring myself to get out there to fire up the grinder.

I'm not going to do anything like that (although COULD on the sides where the roll bar protrudes).

Its getting a bit cold out so made the decision to move to somewhere which better caters to my needs. By next weekend I should be fairly settled in my new pad- I finally get my own man cave- a very nicely sized double garage with tons of power points ETC ETC ETC which is ALL MINE

Also the house has TONS of character. it hangs over a gully full of bush and has a floating walkway around the back of the house over the bush. see the photo its a 1 to 2 metre fall over the side of the walk way depending which side you fall over- and Its steep enough to ensure that the walk back up would be long and painful.



I'm quite bloody happy.

Anyway,
Cut the shit out of the toyota's steel to get it down to its final resting place. The nissans strut tops actually poke up through the hilux guards into the engine bay so i'll have to have little boxes made to go over the top to seal things.


Lots of shit to do to it tomorrow. time for an early night.

It was spent all day out in the sun winding up rivnuts, drilling holes and cutting shit out with the grinder....and drinking bourbons.

The top of the rad will stick out more than the bottom when the top mounts are on. I think there is more than enough space for the air to flow through so as to not restrict the fans.

I'd like as much usable space back there as possible so a tent and few bags of clothes etc can be thrown on.. as well as a spare tire down as low as possible.


Pretty jealous after seeing the pics of that green lux with the mid mounted v8. Thats awesome. Mines just got this lowly diesel pos.

You would probably have that V8 cracked open to replace bits and pieces 10 times more often than your TD42 . Its not all bad!

And like someone said you would need rubber hands or a team of malnurished Africian kids to get at it.

Riv-nuts rule

The biggest problem with where the rad is (apart from being to close) is there is no airflow there at all. Remember riding on the back of a ute and sliding up close to the cab as there is no wind there? So all the fans will do is circulate the same hot air rather than get fresh cold air. The air right behind the cab swirls which is why dust collects there.
You either need ducting or shift the rad up, back or to the side. I ran my intercooler rad about 200mm behind the cab but right out to the side so when the fan pulled the air through, it allowed cold air to flow in.

Ditto the rivnuts! I don't know how you could build without them!

Darinz is correct about the eddy currents in the air behind the cab and the air just cycling about. There is some new air entering the swirling air and some warm air leaving however so decent fans might do the trick. I would just run a little duct from the side or top of the cab and space it back just far enough to get the air to it.

Jaffa's truck, while very kool, is a very different animal to what Nathan is building. Jaffa's truck doesn't do any road mileage at motorway speeds.

While that is a good idea I could see a low branch sliding its way down and making a home for itself in that radiator. Could easily block it off with a flap or something though once you head bush I guess.

The scoop/duct is only needed at road speed. Won't do anything but catch mud, forest if in the bush. Slow speed will be where your relying on the fans alone. Just make the duct removable or adjustable to be below the roof line or similar when offroad maybe.
