did you manage to sell the niva?.
these are very underated, sure they have there problems and are different to a run of the mill 4x4 but with these trucks maintanence is the key.
a little underpowered sure but can be uprated easily, they are an old design and are cheap and can be cheaply repaired.
how many trucks run standard with constant 4x4, locking centre diff, high/low range, 5 link rear axle, independant front end, and light weight.
i run one of these trucks and i have had no major difficultys with it.

Aye, agree with that. I love my FJs but I'd still have another Niva, the light weight will carry you over mud many a heavier truck will sink into.
Well most of the time.............. :?

That's not a bad pic :D , I like it.
Looks like a lack of speed attacking the obstacle that caused this Niva to get stuck.
I always found when I had my Nivas that, let us call it "carelessness", would get me under, over or around obstacles I didn't think it would tackle. The Niva would take any abuse I could throw at it. And if something was to break, you were safe in the knowledge that spare parts were cheap and plentiful. Can't say the same of my Discovery :(
Awesome little cars.

so true cloggy so tru. i have looked at putting a fiat 2ltr into mine and as you said in another post they do bolt in but with their problems.
cloggy how did you get around the problem of the oil filter hitting the engine mount?.
i am currently in the process of fitting a lift kit as well as looking at ways to mount the front diff and other odds and ends and the good thing about it is i dont have to spend mega bucks doing it.

Hey Nivaman, how about posting a build thread for yer mods, I'm always keen to hear about modded Nivas and I'm sure others will be too.

I agree Cloggy, mine cost me $200 so I used to tackle obstacles with much more enthusiasm (speed  ) than I have with any truck since. I always was waiting for it to break but it hardly ever did. And when it did it cost me bugger all to fix.

I cut of the oil filter mounting flange, drilled and tapped new holes in the filter mounting block and used a remote filter. A little tricky and had people scratching their heads as I had a few hydraulic hoses (4 in total) coming from the same area (2x for the remote filter and 2x for the power steering) Will post pics somewhere and give you a link tomorrow.

i wont be doing all the work at one go but just when i get the money and the time. at the moment im battling with trying to wire in a internal reg alternator instead of the lada external reg one.
my next trick will be to raise the truck.

Another niva 4 sale

Post by Goose »

This seems to be a good place to talk ladas....
I'm trying to get rid of mine, I think I've worn the old girl out. But yes, they are incredibly good for what they are! I had mine up worsleys track, in the pouring rain, and the only other truck to get up there that day was a lifted, 35"tyred hilux!! Not bad for the lada, considering it's on 215/15 dunlop adventureres!!
I'm getting rid of it because A; motor is sad =(
and B; I'm sick of it stopping in the water!! (diesel, here I come!!)
and C; I'm a big guy! (big guy, small truck...round peg, square hole!!)
So, if anyone wants it, (or maybe parts, preference given to someone who wants the whole thing), it's a cossack, good front and rear seats(half cloth/half vinyl) doors and rear hatch good, most other panels have some damage =) Motor sad, but runs, near new 215/15 adventurers on lada white spokes. The only thing I want reasonable money for is the tyres, everything else cheap!
PM me or reply here if ya want anything.

How much you looking for Goose? I might be interested in the whole thing or have a mate who may want it for the wheels and tyres. Pic or two would be cool too if you have one.

Cheers.

Yeah, probably lookin at around that, maybe a bit less, money is a big motivator, the sooner I sell my stuff, the sooner I get my hilux :D

It does run, probably could be better with a tune......

Wheels and tyres, want around $450, as mentioned before they're pretty much brand new.

Cheers for puttin the pics up Nibby, it goes to show you have some uses

Nivaman,
Here are some pics of my oilfilter conversion.
The picture below (with some trick photography) shows the amount of interference between the original Fiat filter housing and the enginemount.
Image

So I cut away the filter mount as shown below
Image

Then I drilled and tapped for new fittings as shown by the red and white arrows. The other hole in the bottom of filter mount (not the centre one, the one of to the side) was blanked off. The other two pipes blanked off with white tape are for the powersteering.
Image

I then got the guys at ENZED to make me up some flash new hoses. Only one is shown in the pic below. Connected up in the way shown to allow the engine to be filled with oil whilst still on the stand and oil pressure to be built before starting the engine for the first time. Normally this would be two hoses, feed and return to the remote filter. I used a Holden V8 filter.

thanks for the pics cloggy.
i had the same filter mount you had and as you did discovered that interference so i got hold of another oil filter mount that mounted the filter straight down instead of to the side but it still has interference. i am not going with power steering at this stage, i had the lada engine out and had the fiat block in to check clearance.
i couldnt stand not driving the lada so i put the lada engine back in for now so i could drive it.
when i had the lada engine out i cut the sump to suit and was looking at ways to mount the front diff.
i have been told the fiat 124 has a limited slip diff but to find one is like looking for rocking horse poo, i can get one from russia for approx $1000, maybe i should find myself a russian wife and get her to bring one over for me.
i understand there is also electric steering that can be fitted to nivas.
if there is anybody who knows of a fiat 124 limited slip diff lying about let me know.

smokey i gave harman motors a call and was told a fiat 125 axle housing with a escort limited slip diff was what i wanted. then he told me the price $1000 which is about the same from russia.

124 fiat is about the same as lada, he told me that the 125 fiat is stronger than lada and stronger than 124 fiat, the 125 fiat has stronger axles and the same splines as the escort diff.
have given murray costello cars a call and they told me they dont have any front diff mounts in stock but can get them.
this lada is starting to get out of hand, anybody want to sponsor me?.
