WANTED: Surf 2LT head/complete engine. YaHoo FOUND ONE!

Post by zoopa »

Hi all, im looking for a 1990 Ln130 Surf 2LT cylinder head or a complete engine to drop in. It would appear that mine has done the very uncommon thing of cooking itself
Im only wanting to fix and sell this vehicle so am just looking for the usual factory standard parts.
Im in a bit of hurry so any suggestions as to where I could get this would be much appreciated.

Good luck

I know you are going to sell it but i suggest you chck your radiator and hoses (normally the cause to a blown head gasket or cracked head on the 2LTs) :(

The $700 will buy you a new bare head, you'll still have to have everything moved from the old head to the new one and then set up properly... you're staring down the barrel of a $2k-$2.5k job

Find a second hand motor if you just want to sell it - you should find something for around $1k-$1.5k

Uncommon it is (unfortunately) not, these motors are prone to cracking heads (not from radiators and hoses, just simply from a combination of poor design, and crap quality NZ diesel, and probably the first 100,000km in Japan with no oil or filter changes...

Good luck... what are you going to get when you sell this one?

I had a good look at the head and gasket and it seems to be a slowly creep up from behind crack, not the sudden shit what was that, one. I had been a bit anal about the radiator/hoses and watching the temp gauge but to no avail
Mmmm what am I going to get after this vehicle? Well id love to say a honking big anything with big everythings but I am reduced to anything that will get me from A - B at this point.
But do you know what really hurts the most? Not the big repair bill or the fact Im gonna be driving a shit box soon, but the four times I have needed a tow it was behind a Mitsi RVR. How humiliating being towed by a bloody RVR in a Surf in 5 o clock traffic down the busiest roads in ChCh.

i had been driving it for the last 1 1/2 years not a problem :D and i was pretty anal about temp gauge and water level to  then i bought an FJ40 two weeks ago  and i swapped cars with the wife, problem is i pulled the FJ apart to do it up :? so now shes got her car back and im stuck

a 2L head will fit but it depends on what year/model 2L you get beacuase there are two types of 2L/LT engines. the first is what is commonly referred to as the roller-rocker head as this is exactly what the head has along with the cam underneath the valve cover which is aluminium. the second is the tin-top motor which is what you've got. it doesn't have roller rockers in the head and the valve cover steel. any motor before late 1988 will be the roller rocker motor and anything after late 88/89 is the tin top motor. another common way of telling is that the LN60 series trucks are roller rocker and the LN106/130 are tin top. hope this helps.
