Surfs crack heads??

Post by Guest »

I have heard alot about the heads of the 2.4 and 3.0tdi engines haveing head cracking problems in the 1990-1993 models, is this true? what can be done to safeguard against this? Extra fan? Oil cooler? im looking at buying a 1990 2.4tdi surf so i just wanted to know beforehand.

I don't know

I went down the track of looking at the Toyota Hilux surfs and in the end I decided not to bother. most people I talked to said they just weren't worth the trouble and expense.

My local mechanic had to do the head on my dads Hilux Surf and it cost him close to $3000.

I talked to a couple of engine reconditioners and both of them said the same thing. They are more trouble then they are worth, one of them was just a small company and reckoned that they did the head on a surf at least once a week.

In the end after a couple of near buys and a couple of mechanic checks that turned out all bad, in terms of the head, I bought my self a swb Safari and couldn't be happier no major problems and it goes really well on and off road.

But the surfs are a nice looking car that go really well if you don't have any head trouble. So if you are a mechanic or have a mechanic friend that can do a head for you cheap then go for it, you may be sweet and never have any trouble but you may also have trouble.

Good luck

Surfs crack heads when they are abused simple as that it's only a small engine compared to alot of four wheel drives out there. The ones imported from japan were generally designed to run in much colder temps than what we have over here. Simple solution have the radiator proffesionally flushed and cleaned re filled with coolant plus a cooling additive. Fit a big bore exhaust approx $500 nz life will be sweet plus your surf will fly rock on

Whats this, a 2lt flying? Those bl   dy motors are only good for stopping the truck flipping over backwards in a strong head wind.
In saying that though I abused the crap out of mine and never cracked the head (exhaust was 21/2inch though)
Still I was able to jog faster than that motor could push the truck 8) 8)

Some of the 2.4's have had a problem with cracking heads. Not all and I do not believe thats it is as common as some people make out. Mine has done 251,000 K's. The last 40 are mine and the previous owner had it for 150ks.
Keep the cooling system clean.
Make sure the thermostat and cap are in good condition.
Ensure the viscous fan works
Whip out your wallet and go for the 2.5in exhaust.
For $5k+ I rekon they great value for money as a 4x4.

just been looking into this for a mate as well..this is what i have found so far....

the 2lt heads are known to over heat and crack between the valves. quick cure to stop it happening is to improve the cooling by installing a big bore exhust (or even just removing the muffler).

a better fix is to replace the 2lt head with a 3l head. you may find that a new 2lt head from toyota is infact a 3l head. the 3l heads don't crack as much but any head will overheat and crack if you abuse them or run with a dirty airfilter.

as mentioned already any jap import needs the thermastat changing. also check the fan adjustment and installing a decent temp guage is better than the "o no it boiled" toyota temp guage :P
