legalities body swaps?

Post by whib »

does anyone know the details of swapping bodies? im interested in knowing.
If you buy a different body to put onto your existing chassis, does the numplates-certs-chassis and vin numbers belong to the chassis or the body?
so if you swap your body, do you retain your current ' identity' or start again with the new body 'plates' etc??

Generally the rego and VIN go with the chassis.
So if replacing body like with like you should be OK as you will not be altering or modifying any mounting points.

I've done this on mine swapping from an older surf body to a newer model one. Rang up my certifier and asked him if it was all good and he didn't see any problems with it and it didn't need recerting. I just swapped over my cert tags and vin tags myself and when i went for a wof the guy started taking down the vin off the back window, told him it was a different body and he just looked at the tags and didn't say a word about them.

EDIT: I also remember hosehustler did a straight body swap a few years ago cause he rolled it but he got all his revinned so don't know what was involved with his

Yep, bro-in-law Hosehustler has done it and there was a legal requirement, not sure what. Pm him.

What happens if the chassis is monocoque and you want to fit a seperate chassis under it, can you still use the monocoque body's chassis tags and rego?.

You would be up for certication as modified vehicle because you will be changing mounting points etc or even have to start from scratch as a low volume one off vehicle.

Thanks Ralfie
Sounds like big $$ would be involved and a lot of paper work to get it certified.
