To get good nice welds you really need to use gas ive always used argoshield, i used gasless migs before to try them out and didnt find it very succsessfull.

bite the bullet and use gas. get rid of the flux core and run a small diameter copper coated wire and run argoshield with it. or you can run it with c02 and put up with the splatter but its more cost effective

C02 for sure, and your right renting gets expensive especially when you have a gas set as well. but $11 per month for a c02 bottle aint bad. you can use the soda stream bottles like my bro does. but he has a real small mig.

You can use a CO2 extinguisher as a bottle...you just need to get it tested & fit the right valve & regulator.

Yea they work good, But I upgraded mine to a 6.3kg bottle as i was using the co2 extinguisher sized one to fast eh, I own my 6.3kg bottle and its only $60 to fill each time and lasts a while for the weekend warrior.!
Re: mig gas what would you recommend
I paid about $300 for my Co2 bottle, brand new and full from Asko gas. Costs $32 for a refill and lasts for about 1/2 - 3/4 of a 15kg roll of mig wire.
As an aside I just got a 15kg of non copper coated wire on trade me for $45 delivered to the door.

Just bought a 5.8kg bottle of Co2 $350, I find piss all difference between co2 and argoshield, although I mainly only work with .8 panelsteel.

I need a bit of advice, when I bought my Mig, I was also given an Argo-sheild bottle, but I don't actually have an account with BOC, so am not paying rental
My question, how can I get it filled? with out gettin snapped

Dont grind the numbers off...if its been tampered with they probably wont fill it...it must have been pressure tested every5 yrs...last thing you want is for it to fail..... & they do fail from time to time.

Re: mig gas what would you recommend
i brought a new argoshield bottle from a welding shop on annex road here in chch for $500 and it's $45(i think) for them to fill it. previous to that i had co2 which worked well but welds weren't as nice as with argoshield and cost me more to fill. also tried the small disposable one's and they where nothing but a waste of time and money.

Re: mig gas what would you recommend
At the cost of argoshield why would you stuff around with Co2?
I run a big bottle (about 1200mm tall?) and at $140 to fill it lasts for so long that the rental is normally more in the long run. One bottle did a complete new chassis for my GQ, including new deck and modified rollcage and a complete rollcage for a Suzuki.
And then if using Tig on steel can just swap it to that and save the Argon as that really is expensive. (well that is the plan as the Tig has only just arrived)
Have to agree that flux cored is crap. Get better weld with a stick!
