hey guys,
after reading this again I'm quite keen to do it to my escudo but this thread never summed up weather it was legal or not. don't want to get re-certed.

cheap snorkel-just to clarify
Re: cheap snorkel-just to clarify
What, putting a hole through the firewall to mount a filter in behind the dash? Probably would need certifying, likely depends on the size, position and tidyness of the hole and whether you go to the WOF man on a Monday morning or 4pm Friday arvo.
At worst, it is easily reversible.
As a suggestion, before making a big hole in the firewall, it'd be worth checking out just how much noise there will be in the cabin with the intake in there. I had a Mazda MX5 with an intake that drew in air from the same place as the dash airvents behind a panel separating the engine bay from where the wiper motor was, and under acceleration the induction noise was a whole heap louder, but could be toned down by shutting the vents. I would hate to think what it would have been like if it was in the car itself...

Just a thought, because there is nothing worse than a ridiculously noisy car as a daily driver or on long trips.

It looks pretty easy but so is a pipe snorkel. You can hear a pod filter sucking in the enginebay normally meaning its pretty loud, I'd guess it would be really bad in the cab esp as a daily driver.
Could get a loud radio though lol.
The pics on outerlimits are from lilpig so could ask him as to how bad it is.

Re: cheap snorkel-just to clarify
something to think about.
the wall is called a fire wall so at a guess cutting a lagre hole in it and fitting a rubber or plastic tube is going to compomise the effective use of the fire wall barrier function.
also if the engine back fires bad i would hate to see how far the flame would travel into the cabin space.
i looked into doing this a couple of years back and it was the noise issue that put me off it the most.
i have been in bush trucks that have there intake behind the glove box and that was noisy, i wouldnt want to be hearing that for 2,3,4 hours plus

Still comes down to what the trucks for really. And would a backfire really come through a filter and the tube that far?? I'd think yes possible but unlikely. I thought there was a rule regarding max hole size in the firewall but i could be wrong.
Re: cheap snorkel-just to clarify
Surely the chance of backfire back through an AFM, about 2m of intake piping, a panel and a pod filter on an EFI engine is pretty low?
All the same, should there be a fuel fire or plastic fire in the engine bay, it'll make short work of plastic pipe and be straight in around your feet and the carpet and sound deadening, both of which burn well...
It'd be worth getting a piece of flexy hose and piping it from the airbox through a side window just as an experiment just to see how loud it really is before grabbing the holesaw... I think you may be surprised just how loud it is under load and decent throttle.

I also think the chances of a backfire are zero to none.
Modern EFI cars alwyas have thin wall plastic air ducting that would simply blow to pieces with a decent backfire..........and how many have you seen in bits.
If he was spraying NOS or something I'd be worried about it.
but then i'd be more worried about the floor falling out and about how much danger my manifold was in.
