Site modifications and enhancments

Post by mike »

Hi All,

Don't be alarmed over the next week if sometimes the site misbehaves suddenly. I'm just fiddling around in the background installing new stuff I've modified on the test site.

I think in the next two weeks the following changes will be introduced.

Memberships: done but not installed, just need to get the benifits and apply restrictions.

Recovery Squad DB: Just started.

Members 4wds overhaul: ToDo

Vendors forums: Half done - > just need to add forums and tidy up access.

classifieds: small change limiting to payed members.

Points system: Done, but not implimented, the more you use the site the more points you get which gives you discounted memberships.

And the Best and Biggest
Gallery upgrade: Not Started, last on list but get this. You will be able to upload photos, add gps points to the photos and google earth will take you to the place on the map. It can do a whole series of photos so you can record a journey. Cool eh 8)

its already there, just disguised as the journal, needs alot of modifiying to accept picture uploads and customisation around the display of the information contained within.

Its the one on the list above called members 4wds.

Can you guys can you please refrain from hi-jacking this thread as it is a very important thread about the site modifications and it needs to stay focused.

Cheers

what are the restrictions that you mean to impose? like only the members using the albums, access to certain threads ( like the leaders with their trips forum thing ), or the visitors as opposed to user/members with access variances? just was curious...

also, kudo's on the google gps thing! sounds way out of my league but will be a blast.. h20lova will be able to finally put his 'in cab' gps to use.. 8)

ore is moving onwards and upwards...

congrats on the success of the site mike..

mainly on the use of the gallery. Maybe just in the creation of albums and uploading. Obviously that will be last on the list with the massive upgrade needed in the gallery. Forums wont be restricted well no more than they are now with the trip leaders and private club forums. so no difference there. The only difference will be avatars and later on a system for including photos easier into the forums. These arnt included in the next couple of weeks changes though. The biggest thing will be the benifits of becoming a member, the major one an ORE website membership card which gives discounts from 10% to 25% at 4wd servicers and suppliers around NZ

Thanks for the positive feedback. It is appreciated

Hi Mike,
I see in your post you say

"Points system: Done, but not implimented, the more you use the site the more points you get which gives you discounted memberships."

When you say use of the site are you refering to the use of the forums, if so I wonder if you might have some people posting just for the sake of it rather than to say something relevant to the topic. Could end up with some of the threads just full of junk.

I find the list of latest topics really good to see whats being discussed, if there were alot more posts, then would end up missing alot of useful info.

Just a thought
Thanks
Tim

Hi Tim,

I understand where you are coming and it is a concern, although I will let people know that posting just to get points will be a waste of time as it would take about 3-5 years to earn enough points from posting to make it get a good discount. It is just using the site normally and being an active member that the most reward will come. Naturally if people abuse it, it will have to be removed and the rest will miss out. As with every other rewards system in the world this is always going to be a problem

Paid members wouldn't pay if they didn't

Wait for Mike to announce the changes, but I would expect all the basic site functionality to remain for unpaid members, with the paying members (read: the people who help keep the board alive and kicking by supporting it fniancially) getting a few extra goodies.

Of course, like I said, wait for Mike to announce what he's decided on - I could be waaaay off the mark :)
