Okay so I have been doing a lot of reading lately on EGR and the bad effects it has on an engine (the gunk it leaves behind) and also on catch cans.
I have decided to fit a catch can and with the EGR deatcivated get the intake cleaned. Basically with the exhaust manifold being unbolted and removed for the EGT probe to be fitted I figured they may as well do the clean up then. Going to have to remove most of the pipes/intercooler anyway so will get the pipes checked for perishing too. How do I/they clean the intake on the head without removing the head? Maybe use some spray in stuff while the engine is running?
So what can I use to clean this mess up over the counter and how do I use it (where do I spray it in?) if the price for my mechanic to do it seems excessive. Heard wynns made a product 'EGR3' and you spray it in while the engine is running but cant find any here so far.
And finally where is the best spot for the water temp probe? Had a quick look but I dont know my way around this donk.
Oh yeah I noticed a pipe seems to be missing on a fitting near the bottom middle of the intake manifold (about 1/2 inch I guess in dia), can't find a hose to fit it, is this just another unused connection or should I continue searching for the hose?

Dont use any spray stuff while its running....
It will go BANG because of the compression ratio. (Like getting water in head, So I am told and never wanted to test it)
To get rid of the gunk....
Take off the intake manifold and clean it.
As for the head....still on the block in the truck.
Carefully remove the bulb which would have formed on the valve.. And gunk from walls.
Plastic / wooden stick and vac it out.
Make sure valve is closed to stop crap getting into cylinder head.
Fiddly job. Then a swab with degreaser / kero on it.
Most of the gunk will be in the intake.
Its like thick grease and gets everywhere.
Have fun

Was affraid some one would say that

Might chase some of the diesel tuners in the area for advise too. They must have dealt with this sort of thing before.
Heres a link to the wynns stuff. http://www.wynns.be/news.aspx?l=EN&iSec ... icleID=826

the only other way i've heard is to install a water injection system. use that for a few weeks will clean all the crap out.
if you block off the EGR don't forget you also need to disable the egr butterfly in the intake.

Where in the intake is it? Is it before or after the intercooler?
Such a noob question
Never mind, I got off my ass and had a proper look. Found it I think on top of the intake manifold just below the intercooler.

Well after looking for a catch can, and refusing to pay the rediculous amounts they seem to be worth (not in my eyes), I will do with out for a while longer. Besides it looks to be a pain to do anyway, so it will go on the nice to do list. Still going to get all my gauges fitted and remove the EGR butterfly and if required get the intercooler etc cleaned of EGR gunk. Will wait to make a decsion on the intake manifold removal and cleaning (see how bad it is) Maybe I should spring for some new flash wanky silicon connections
. Nah black rubber is fine.

I have removed my EGR and butterfly stuff. If you want to take a peak... Drop me a PM.

Had my EGR system blocked off by professionals at the same times as the new head went on. (did not have the time to do it myself. The porting of the new head alone, took me a week)
They did not modify or remove the small egr butterfly at all, nor the big one either. Have had no issues with it in the 55000 kms since.

they may have left it in but plug the hose or unpluged a connector which will do it.
but then again the "experts" could be idiots and didn't bother. it will still run OK but can suffer a bit of lower effective compression as it starves the motor of air.
problems are more noticeable on worn motors that are running low on compression. often end up blowing white smoke due to low ignition temps or use more fuel than with EGR.
