Best tyres for sand.Without modifications.

Post by local buoy »

Hi guys,

Im a newbie to the site, and to 4wd. I do a lot of diving around Wellingtons the south coast(devils gate etc..).I have a Toyota v6 surf. I dont really want to modify the vehicle yet as at the moment it is the family vehicle as well.So keeping this in mind I would like to know what tyres are best to get me through the sand Without getting stuck?.As this would greatly extend my range when driving around the coast. Thanks

tyres with the least amount of void in them, eg ht (highway tyres), eg road tyres, so dont bother buying any

buy yourself a compressor and let the tyres down a bit, it will make them work far better in the sand. Keep a spade and a couple of old sacks in the truck just incase.

Yep like Dave said let your tyre pressures down (lots), that probably makes a bigger difference than what sort of tyre you've got on

Cheers for the tips guys...I wanna get a set of tyres just for the coast,So bald road tyres are the go? How about tyre width,am I able to get wider ones that will fit on without mods?I see some guys driving straight over the sand no problem. I always stick to the hard ground but want to be able to drive on sand too.I have been told to drop pressure and to take old carpet just in case aswell. It would be all the more better if I could avoid getting stuck alltogether, because that just eats into my divning time. :D
Will get hold of rob too.Cheers

wider tire you have the better. would be awsome to get hold of some of those paddle tires the icelandic people use for the sand dune driving.

south coast can be a dangerous place on your own

and even more treacherous if ya go on your own

do not under any circumstances drop down to the sand if you havent got any mates with vehicles with you to recover you if it turns to shite

salt water kills vehicles when the tide comes in after you get stuck on your own

trust me, it aint worth it

Yeah cheers mate,I do go alone often, but up untill longbeach you dont really have to drive on sand.So thats where I stop.It would be awesome to be able to get up to cable bay.Wellington being Wellington means the wind stops us from taking the boat out often.....So the next best thing is the surf.

i have a 2.8 diesel surf surf which is pretty gutless and i run 31x10.5 all terrains round there on 20 psi, any smaller than that and i just sink into the softer sand

I have had good results "dare I say it" with some Hankook RT01's which are mud tyres.
Aired down to 15psi they had a huge footprint.
The side walls were very flexable.
They were 33 x 12.5 .
And I have a heavy truck...LWB Square Prado.
Used to go all day at Muriwai in the soft stuff. And get further than those with "less agressive tyres"
But I think the combo of Auto and floatation type tyres helped.
As already said, dont travel alone on the beach... Once in the tide...kiss yah truck goodbye.

just to add and i''m sure its obvious but we do funny things when we panic but if you do start to get stuck do yourself a favour and DONT plant boot or you'll just dig yourself deeper.
If your a little stuck get out and have a look, you can usually help yourself out with some wood, or carpet/sacks, spade etc etc once your bellied down to your chasis your pretty much stuffed.

X2 for the hankook muds. Got some 33s with almost no tread left on them and they are awesome in the sand!

I can see it now, a truck cruises up, out hops a newbie, introduces himself, then 2 weeks later when he next catches up with everybody, he has to do it all again, coz nobody remembered who the hell he was, least of all the long haired hippie who had to prop himself up all night, before stealing somebody's bed

Yeah I sort of thought I might have had bit of a sway on  , it was Reece's fault, he was late picking me up from the quarry and I'd cleaned out half the chillybin while I was waiting for him on the side of the road  ImageImage

I got up to cave bay on Saturday..let tyres down to 20psi and the truck got through all the sand with only 1 minor hiccup.I had to navigate around a protruding rock, where the tracks are on a lean.I slid off track ended up in the soft stuff.Reversed, went forward and she pulled through ok untill I got back on track. Was well impressed with the ol truck.Maybe I dont need the big tyres after all? Might look at getting a lift for more clearance.
