I went half way up worsly last weekend we got stuck on the big climb after the sortof s bend bit (fist time ive been up so cant compare). managed to get my truck up with abit of digging (on 33s) but the other trucks with us on 31s didnt have a hope. as long as you have 33's minimum to get to where we were was pis easy and hasnt really been any rain since then i dont think...

As for my presigious passengerial option that will be installed in the copilot area for the weekend (oh god, I'm getting Leithfielditis ), If its Worsleys I can meet you either in Rangi, Kaipoi or somewhere else close around there or if its the Waimak I can just meet you at the ramp? Any other ideas? I'm easy...

Aye either sounds fine, I'll be heading over the gorge bridge through Cust to Rangiora anyway so maybe we could just meet at your place or the shed either way? Then I know where to come when you start the SAS on my Mu................ :D

I will be bringing the Mu but unfortunately I'm under strict instruction from the missis to keep you well away from it, stupidly I showed her photos of yours to try and show her how cool it looked but it seemed to have the opposite effect.
Cheers mate, see you at 11.30

Hey Dan,
Final decision Sunday morning around 9 depending on weather, Worsley being a bad idea in the wet or after rain. If someone can go check Worsley late Saturday or early Sun that'd cool and we can discuss on this thread Sunday morning. I'm meeting Steve at the shed at 11.30 so plan was to meet somewhere around 12. Sounds like north side of the Waimak is pretty crap now so maybe we can have a run up through the rough track up the south side from Belfastish to MacLeans Island.

Cheers.

The Waimak south side smells bad - I really don't like it over there... and I think someone mentioned its a no-go zone now? Been ages since I was over there - just don't like it

Failing all else, theres the Waipara...

And the details:

At this stage, 12 noon on Sunday at whichever location suits the weather
Al will check on the local weather in town and post around or before 9am Sunday if Worsleys is a go... if it is then 12pm at the bottom. If its not then 12pm at the boat ramp under the SH1 bridge.

If anyone gets lost, give me a call on 021 637 600 - or just meet us at the shed at 11:30 (map above).

South side of the Mak is still open. I'd be keen to give the Waipara a go some time but all the rivers are stupidly high at the mo so not so safe. Maybe better in a couple of weeks Steve. I was passing over the Selwyn bridge on SH1 today and there was actually a good flow of water under it. It is usually dry for a good few k's downstream of there. Other snowfed rivers will be the same.

The south side is the actual official designated 4wd area according to the council ranger that I was talking to on the north side :shaking2:

I've seen your truck on its side more than I have on its wheels... so I'll walk thanks Image

Actually, I'm thinking of throwing a welded diff in the bum of the MU for the weekend just for a laugh... might be good to see how it goes...

The entire Waimak river is being managed by a new River managemnet Plan. It is available from Ecan offices if you wish to have a look, Basically the river is being managed to allow different groups to have access to only certian areas, but at present the river is OK for 4WD vehicles on both sides, but over time you will notice areas being closed of to 4WD as they allocate areas to the different recreational users. The North side has a special built 4WD training area with hills steep drop offs and a good place to try out mods and do a bit of skill training, it is probably a good place to start a trip. It is on the North side about 2-3kms upstream from the boat ramp. The south side is still OK and the best entry point is still at the end of Couts Island Road.
The Waipara is getting a bit of overuse and there are issues with people not sticking to the actual river bed, so if you go there keep within the actual river bed and do not be tempeed to have a hoon up onto the flats. Hurinui council is under pressure from adjoining land owners to take action against those who do not keep within the river boundrys. Have a good day out :groupjump:

Hey thanks for that info. Always good to have the local gos on ya local playground. Never beenn to that play area, anyone done it. could that be an option? Sth side is really narly but bloody good fun, not a place for shineys or trucks without snorkels as some of the holes on the track are over bonnet depth and most times no way around. But still keen to go there though.

4wd area

Post by Goose »

Yeah, I've done that area with nibby and h2o, it's not a big area, but there is some real challenging climbs/descents, and lots and lots of mud!!! :D
There's a good water area as well. I could imagine with lots of vehicles it would be utter chaos!!

I mean chaos in a good way!!!

If you are going there, someone give me a txt, you can access the area by car, so I might come down just for a watch =) 0210781342

Needswork, thanks for that info... you sound well informed, welcome aboard by the way - and would you mind introducing yourself? Just so we know who we're talking to...

Also, is this training area easy to find? Haven't been down there in a while, and last time was just to play in the usual muddy soupbowl...

Sounds like a few people are leaning towards the Waimak now? Anyone particularly want to do worsleys instead or should we just make a call now and go in search of smelly mud?

getting to 4x4 area

Post by Goose »

If I'm comin, I'll show you all the way....
if I'm not, from the boat ramp, head up river (on the gravel rd that takes you past motorbike area), its pretty straight (a couple of minor bends) for 2-3k's, then as it comes into a tighter right-hander there's a turn to the left. (NB, about where the scrub starts to get closer to the rd)Take that left and follow it around to the 4x4 area. (there's a couple of off-tracks, dont turn off) First you come to the big water hole, just past that is the big hilly/muddy bit.

Last time I was there she was pretty cool.

Nibby/h2o, do those directions sound about right?

Anyone else feel free to correct if Im a bit out

Poll is currently saying 75% south side Waimak 25% Worsleys. We could either go with the majority by tomorrow morning, meet up in the morning and decide but that wastes valuable play time or the group could split.

If there's a smaller number of trucks wanting to go up Worsleys then weather permitting those keen do that could to go off and attempt Worsleys(I'd be keen as I've never been up) and maybe meet up at the Waimak later on.

How does that sound?

sounds very logical... i'm keen, with h2o, to head out to the north, or south side of the mak.. like others have said, too many trucks at once up the worsley would be a disaster.. single file track+ 12 trucks+ big bog holes= long wait.. :'-(

at least if we check on this thread in the am, about 9 and can split up... could be the wiser option...

Waimak sounds great!

What about meeting at say back of belfast pub at say midday? Cause everyone knows where it is and theres heaps of room round back, thats if we're allowed to

Otherwise the boat ramp sounds good.

I think meet at Belfast pub. That way we can decide weather to go north or south side. but will go with majority (the democratic way and all that)

Any problems if i bring my dog?? (no its not Niblik!! :roll:he's already coming) freindly beast, gets noisy until your moving then to busy puffing...........
