found this on trademe, and was thinking it would be good for my turbo project.
thoughts anyone?
It is a T04E ar.60, no internal wastegate with a t3 flange on it...
Cheers
TD42 turbo potential..?
Re: TD42 turbo potential..?
what ever you do stay with an internal wastegate if you are going anywhere near mud!
I have had both and the simplicity of the internal is best. The difference in performance is only really relative if ou have alittle motor with lots of boost or are pushing the limits.

Re: TD42 turbo potential..?
Hi Mate im exactly opposite to Darin ,Ive run both and am now running an ext wastegate and find it spools up alot quicker and doesnt over boost ..Steve
Re: TD42 turbo potential..?
yeah, ive owned and modded a few turbo vehicles and always found you can more get stable boost with an external as the internal ones usualy melt or cant hold thre pressure properly.
What do you mean by use an internal if you go any where near mud?

Re: TD42 turbo potential..?
I think what darin was talking about is the extreme temp changes ,as the external wastgate is exposed you could be giving it heaps wastegate etc is red hot and you drop it into cold wet mud etrc it could crack cause problems ? in saying that ive run mine now for over 2 years in a comp truck putting in more boost than i care to admit to and have had no problems ..

Good to know

the turbo showed up today - in good condition, appears to have an inconnel exhaust wheel too, so for $250 its not a bad score!
It also has a port for an internal wastegate, but needs an extra housing bolted to the side of it to attach it. I dont do tonnes of up to your windscreen mud bogging so will go with an external for now

Re: TD42 turbo potential..?
Nah I'm more talking about the extra plumbing involved and the complexity. However I was also talking about a V8 with a single turbo and external wastegate so a bit different.
With my TD42 I just wired the wastegate shut anyway and rang as much boost as the turbo could. Again a bit more extreme than most people would be prepared to do.
I just think for an average 15psi to 20psi then the gains from an external gate aren't worth the hassles of the extra plumbing etc. When you are pushing further (like Steve is and alot of other guys we race) then that changes things and then the performance gains do justify it. Steve truck does go well an is reliable so can't be faulted (apart from the driver
) and isn't a bad model to use. BUT do you need to go to the extreme when an internal gate is cheaper and easier. Also a deisel won't melt a wastegate as the egt's are far lower than a petrol. If you did melt a WG then the last thing you'd be worried about is the couple $ to fix that as the bits of motor that went through the turbo would be of more concern
If I change my turbo (eg go twin turbo) then I'll be going to internal wastegates, but then I have so much extra hp it doesn't really make any difference if a loose a few. Especially if i fit bigger injectors, use the full 7500 rev range and start using the VVT (as I've nver had my truck over 6000rpm yet! and it isn't using the VVT!)
