Large off set rims - issues with WOF's

Post by DirtBoy72 »

Im about to get some new wheels and tyres for my 80 series. I have seen some wheels with a rim / tyre combo on a built up 80 series tourer with a larger than normal off set rims which see the tyres probably about 25mm outside the edge of the guards on each corner. The 80 I saw had an LV cert for the larger wheels and tyres, plus some other work, but I'm told that the LV cert is no guarantee that it will get a warrant every time. Is this correct? I thought a LV cert would guarantee the mods as OK, and if you have the LV cert for the modification, WOF's should be sweet as?

my 80 failed a warrant today due to tyres sticking the guards

I always thought they were flush with the guards, but apparently I was wrong :?

Mine also failed with the stock tyres

As far as I know, you can't at all have tyres poking outside the guards, regardless of wheel type/size.

Flexi flares do the trick...

^^ WOF inspectors discretion again - when mine failed I went away and fitted them then a different testing officer said he wouldn't have failed the vehicle without them and then passed it?

You can get them from Repco, they screw to the underside of your guard, I tried to find some on trademe but found this vehicle which has them fitted:

My safari originally failed with the aftermarket flares, but if you tell them you have simply replaced the factory items with rubber ones to avoid breaking the fibreglass one, you should be fine.

For some reason if the vehicle had factory flares, theres no reason to fail you if you run rubber ones (provided they cover the tread), but if you never had flares and bolt some on, or bolt them to existing flares, you need a cert

AS long as the TREAD isnt outside you should be fine.

Theres a thread on here about flare material. Mines just pop riveted on and passes every time at vtnz. Sounds like its warrant man discretion. All the tread is meant to be covered by the flare which I've been failed on before.

Should work, especially when you tell them the factory ones crack, and are $3k plus via Japan for replacements.
The 3 Testings Stations that ever failed me for flares passed me when I explained my "reasons" for the flares

i was told by the vtnz inspector here that the wheels need to be within a inch from the gaurd, and he passed mine on a wof without them, and mine stick out just over a inch, but i have ruber flares for them.

Cheers

My Safari failed wof with landcruiser offset rims in 16x7", dont even stick out past the flexi flares but the wheel track width, (eg. centre of Left wheel to centre of right wheel) was 5mm too wide, had to cert lift so didnt make any difference but still pist me off,im mean come on! 5mm!
