nz new vs import 94 kzn130 surf.

Post by 1rugger »

does anyone on here know the difference between the nz new and import surf?

as i think i'm going to need a new clutch soon and no longer have the details of the truck i wrecked to get the engine& box so carjam can't help me. as one has a dual mass flywheel and one has a solid flywheel & different clutches.

NZ new 4Runners never came with the 1KZ, the 1st 1KZ's to be sold new in NZ were the 90 series Prado's in '96.

NZ new Diesel ones were 2.8 3L's.

NZ new would be called a 4runner and import a Surf.

As far as know all import Surfs had the Dual mass flywheel , but is a common conversion to fit a solid flywheel.

When my dual mass gave up the ghost it felt like the clutch had gone , clutch was sweet but the dual mass was leaking fluid so stuffed.

do you know if you have a dual mas or solid? most good clutch places should be able to do either.

dunno what mine is, that is what i'm trying to work out so i can get the clutch before i pull it apart, I'm guessing it's dualmass. & definitely clutch on way out as it was slipping when trying to spin tyres up in the mud  .

if you can afford it , get rid of the dual mass and fit a solid, will only be a mater of time before the dual mass gives you dramas

Biggest difference with a jappa and a NZ new is the cooling systems are larger in the NZ and the chassis has extra braces for towing on the NZ. Is the same for the Prados.
Just something I was told by TNZ.

Out of all the 1KZ's its the import Prado's and surf's with the Intercooled version of the 1kzte that dont suffer from the head cracking issue as they had the larger radiator's etc

went out and had a look up the drain slot and it looks like a solid cast fly wheel when compared to this pic
Image and the engine & box have 350,000km's so gessing that some one would have replaced it already. can anyone confirm that the fwd face of the dual mass looks like this?

correct me if I'm wrong but the clutch face would be on the other side(aft side of fly wheel) pic is of fwd side(engine side of fly wheel). which i can see from crank shaft to ring gear on fwd face and look's like a solid flywheel but not sure what the dual mass one look's like :?:

crankshaft side is just a solid plate. maybe 2mm thick, rivited to the back of the flywheel. theres oblong slots in it where the springs are, if you look at that pic you can see the pallet through one of the springs

Actually they had a different generation head as well.
And yes, they still crack heads

interesting to hear that.

otherwise imports are the same. don't forget 4runners are still a surf. just an upspec trim on the budget model surf.
