Re: Mustard Whale, Fj40 build
Had a pretty laxed weekend, played a round of golf today
which I hadnt done since before I started this build.
Still managed to get a few things done on the 40 tho
Bought a shiny new toolbox, spade, axe an handtool toolbox yesterday, so bolted it down this avo

The handtool box axe an shovel are short enough to fit in the toolbox with plenty of room for the 12v compressor, spare oils an recovery gear etc.
Also put the paj rims an 31" tyres on the back an took it home for the first time in 5 months to check if it fits under the garage door, an it does. Now I can stop using the storage unit
Looks gay with the 31s on the back tho
Might just fit with the 33s on the back

Certed an warranted

List of mods

This is the 3rd plate they fu#ked up the 1st 2 an left important things out like wheel size an wheel spacers, body lift blocks so the certifier had to go an get a new one printed , but got it all sorted just in time to get caught in a sweet rain an wind storm in lower hutt on the way back to work
didnt get too wet
Next on the list is a clutch master cylinder as its started leakin on my new paint

This turned up yesterday , 5 Speeds.

Not sure if Ill fit it yet. Need to make a few adjustments such as d/shafts, trans tunnel holes
The guy I got it off said it was noisey but it is a cruiser box an my 4 speed is noisey but works fine so who knows.

Re: Mustard Whale, Fj40 build
Replaced the leaking clutch master cylinder, made some new rear flares out of 100mm wide bunnings plastic garden edging (cos I wasnt happy with the original ones I made
Gave it a general clean an check over.
Bought a 5 door vitara tank to replace the 3 door one, they 5 door one holds an extra 13L but is only 60mm longer front to back so i should be able to make it fit by moving the front mounts forward 60mm
After I finished workin on it I thought itd be a good idea to head up the hutt river for a play, was fun until I picked to wrong place to cross (think the digger had been working there not long before) cos it went from half way up the wheels to guard level in a few meters
only reason this was an issues was because the fan threw water everywhere including into the inlet for the aircleaner
Stopped once Id reached dry land an found this... lucky

Future mod maybe a big electric fan that can be switched off for water crossings

someone has to say and unfortunately nobody has yet
so I'll bear it
fairly sure the Hutt river is not classed as a play area
and that driving init is frowned upon by the council
possibly even an offence, but not too sure
just a heads up dude
and do the snorkel, otherwise you will toast the motor and have to put a V8 in it, on second thoughts, I can show you a mean as hole up Rallywoods

Re: Mustard Whale, Fj40 build
A question for you - where did u get your wheel spacers from? Repco say they no longer sell them and I can't find any 6 stud ones on TM. I'll give BNT a go tomorrow but can't remember where you got yours from.

Thanks - had a look on their site last night and also on http://www.4wdbits.co.nz/ but I'm just after a basic 3mm spacer rather than bolt on type.

Re: Mustard Whale, Fj40 build
I've tried Repco and a few other places and they no longer sell them - they're all telling me that I won't get the vehicle certified with them however I'm keeping the vehicle on the road so certifying the vehicle is a must... I was hoping to get a simple 3mm wheel spacer (rather than bolt on adaptors to provide a greater offset)?

Hey guys,
1. I got them from 4wd bits, the slip on 5mm ones can be bought from repco last time I asked them. An last time I spoke to the certifier he said you could have up to 6mm for cert an up to 27mm for the bolt on ones.
Stefen I guess you want the spacers to overcome the wheel stud length ? (I take it you have put the washers behind them already)
The spacers I used are the 25mm ones but I modified the nuts slightly so that they clear the last little bit of shank on the studs

Im pretty sure theyre working on flood protection, keeping the water ways clear etc. Dont know weather they take any out of the river area or not. But they do drive up an down the river bed thru the river itself.

Nope... the spacers were to overcome the rim rubbing against the brake calipers. I'd set it all up on the rear to run the ventilated 60 series disc and calipers, but I was going to need a 6-8mm spacer to clear the caliper. I've just swapped it all over tonight to the hilux solid disc (non-ventilated from the hubs I cut up - http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=16582&start=165#p233372) and related caliper. The caliper for the solid disc set up is quite a bit narrower, so fingers crossed it may not need a spacer on the back. I'll need to bolt it all up tight to give it a final test and check the clearances.
I've got my washers to place in behind the wheel studs depending on if I need a spacer or not. I was hoping to go with the ventilated discs but it may not be worth all the cost and hassle if I can pull something together with what I've got... it's no race cars so ventilated on the rear isn't really required.
At the moment I still need the 3mm spacers up front unless I 'machine' down the ribbing on the calipers to clear the rims as you'd suggested earlier.
How's your toy going? Enjoying it I hope!
Re: Mustard Whale, Fj40 build
You may get away with no spacers on the rear if you use the washers on the back of the studs with the solid disc setup, otherwise therell be too much shank sticking out of the hub an the wheel nuts will bind up on them.
As for the front, my wheels just clear the bigger calipers, maybe yours are diff offset? (no idea what mine are). If you only need 3mm id just grind it off the heatsink, theres plenty there
Ive been out an about in my 40 quite a bit, been to red rocks a few times. Best was goin up Akas on the weekend
Managed to get it a bit dirty an it tried to hump a tree
