A nice blue FJ40

Post by williamhamilton »

Decided to shift this from a tool shed thread and cover a few more things in one:
So

The main plan is:
    Fit full floater diff (**done)
    Power steering
Shackel reversal (**having second thoughts due to comments by Beercruise, Sadam et.al. "why not do coils". buggers!!)
    Rust coat tub (**done)
Sort out wee bits of panel (**done - almost)
    Forward facing rear seats
    Bigger tyres
    Snorkel(s)
PTO winch (** added due to recent purchase)
    GET DIRTY!!

Full floater diff install
Started in March 2009 with the installation of a full floater diff (stripped out of a doner along with power steering pump etc). A HUGE thanks to those who helped out during the working bee.

Oh yes.. we did have some beer!

Tub cleanup
Looking at options for covering the rear tray as per pic. POR15 was suggested as the best option along with a topping off with Hippo Liner. Started as tray but got a little out of hand and ended up doing inside of the tub.

Prods being used

Cleaned up

Metal ready done and dried
Image

first coat POR15 on (did not know it came in different colours)
Image

2nd coat.. looks soooo pretty in silver :) won't get a chance for Hippo liner till the end of the week. will post results. that POR stuff is HARD when dry!!

Image

User 2 tins of POR15 in the end
Hippoliner all done (ran out before I got to the gearbox cowling)
Image

Stripped out seat frame (Taz01 cut and welded it for me giving me some more space for batteries under the passenger seat) and removed fuel tank. I remembered I had to work out why the fuel gauge was not working anyway...
Image

While the seat frame was out stripped and repainted it.

Problematic gearbox cover - needs replacement

After visiting Beercruiser to check out his shackle reversal the suggestion was if I was going as far as reversal why not just coil it?

Not having the mechanical ability to do either option myself I am seeking advice. What is needed to go the coil route and how much $$$ should I be looking at "investing"?

If I stick 80 gear in the front how do I deal with the width difference of 40 gear in the back?

cheers

it all depends on how much you are willing to spend and if you are going to do the work yourself. In an ideal situation you would do what wopass has done and fit 80 diffs and coils all around, but my suggestion would be to hit up sig and look at his setup and ask him what he would change next time round

Thanks Turoa, PM sent. Hoping to get some time this weekend to do some more work on it so may get some more pics to add.

New bits picked up

Pretty cowling to replace the rusty piece of s&^t that was before.

New toy which was not part of the plan till eagle eyes sig pointed it out on Tardme

How hard are these winches to strip? Was thinking that as it had been sitting for a few months a strip and grease may be worth a crack. Any good schematics/instructions on the web somewhere?

Trying to digest LVVT rules for seats as my certifier suggested roll cage may preclude the install of rear seats for me. Been trying to see what distance is needed from seat to cage. Any Guru out there knows what I should be measuring so I can position seat properly?

TIA

PTO Winch questions

Post by williamhamilton »

Hi, pulling apart bits of the winch I recently picked up and seeking advice.

First. fairlead first couple of pics show the condition of the vertical guides. One has an inner that spins other is still solid (can I assume that the one which spins has just rusted out?)

Image

Image

On the horizontal the bottom one does not move whereas the top does (and has what looks like a pretty shattered nut at one end). What is the proper movement?

Image

Are these bits worth replacing and if so where can I get them from?

Last question (for now). there is a piece of angle iron which mounts the rear (and I do not have). what grade is required to create one of these? Anyone have a spare sitting around? :)

cheers

I suspect not this time around.. I want to drive it again soon.

More research on coils to be done but I would say sometime in the future yes! I like how Sig has done front coils on std axles and how wopass has gone large.. missed out in checking out his beast on my last Hamilton visit.. need to make another excuse to get a trip to Waikato.

As you VERY well know, it is an ongoing addiction but I am trying to learn more mechanicals as I go... A call for help will go out when one of my lambs is big enough to fill the neighbours spit roast machine :) Till then I will do the easy and pretty stuff lol

Sweet.

I never went coils coz at the start it was built to tow toys.
Oh how things change.

Keep up the good work. It good to see. Inspires others.

I'm thinking of heading up to Aucks in my 40 before the end of the year. I'd be real keen to checkout there trucks to mate.

started stripping the PTO motor to give it a clean up (one of the cogs had sht in it stopping it turning) and decided to strip the whole thing and check it all before putting in.

As usual my limited mechanical skills and knowledge stopped me part way through.

How do I remove the shaft in the pic? There is a nut holding the selector arm in which I cannot reach with anything as the gear is in the way and cannot remove the shaft to get the gear out of the way :)

Larger resolution avail at http://picasaweb.google.com/william.hamilton/CarStuff#

Anything I should be doing while it is in bits other than a visual inspection and general clean?

**ADDED**
How do I remove the worm gear from the PTO winch? There is a locking pin which comes out somehow I assume? (Pic now added)

Where is a good source for suspension bushes my ones are pretty shot so thought it would be an opportune time to replace. Found on 4wdbits anywhere else I should consider looking?

just as a quick update to gasket. it is an o-ring gasket so paper would not suffice sadly (we did try an old gumboot which was a new trick for me :) )
I found that the spout face was not totally flat and mechanic tried to machine it down for me to no avail. New spout being sourced :(

LONG time since I posted here so will update initial post with pics etc soon.

I am looking for hinge suggestions for the rear tail gate.
Image

When I got the vehicle the tailgate was help on by a couple of bits of angle iron I would like to make it usable again. My thinking was, in keeping the 40 theme, using a couple of bonnet hinges bolted on.

Any other suggestions of what would work well?

Thanks guys, looks like those are the answer. off back to Tardme to find some :)

Mechanic last time told me the toy was too loud (the argument that it is a V8 and supposed to be loud was close to getting past so may just try again ). Are these mufflers any good?

Those mufflers are all good. have seen a few installed and the seem to be built strong, and they do have a good sound. The one I used is more like this one: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 457305.htm. With centre in and out. Thats sounds really good too.
