5mge supra motor cam timing

Post by Petemcc »

Hi guys. I have just purchased a surf with a 5m that has a few issues. I think it may have a couple of issues which are added together. it has runs intermittently but I think I am slowly narrowing that down. when it does go its seems to run smoothly but timing was way out when i got it, it was gutless and adjusting it by ear got it driving a bit better.

first problem. To set the timing on the marks I was told that you should bridge t1 and e1 i think it was on the diagnostic plug to get rid of any advance. This worked the first time I did it (idle dropped etc) but doesn't do anything now. Any ideas?

When I had it running best, the timing marks were way out when checked with a light. (Even the first time when bridging the two pins pulled the advance). Anyone know roughly the advance that is put on at about 800rmp?

Next I decided to check tdc. It seems like tdc is when the marks are at about 5 degrees. Which helps a bit.

I know that the previous owner had recently changed the cam timing etc. I noticed that the match hole on the cam seems to line up with the guide when the crank its at 0deg on the marks rather than the 5deg mark where I think tdc is.

I think that the cam timing has been set up without knowing this. how would it run it this was the case?

hope that makes sense. I have a few theories working around in my head that I may try to explain later haha.

Cheers
Pete

How is the timing meant to change between hot engine and cold engine? Yesterday I set the timing by ear to get it running best. Then today when starting the timing seemed out, hard to start and farting a bit through the intake. Perhaps the computer isn't getting the correct temp readings? Though fuel didn't seem to have any issues plugs where a little black but no noticeable smoke...

Just another thought I had!
