The original vid got pinched when our video camera got pinched, but we dubbed it onto a tape at yours, so you should have a VCR tape copy somewhere hopefully, its the only one left..........

Re: Maratoto trail opens for '09 summer.
The loop itself is about 6km around.
The question was asked "when will the trail close?" .... it is likely to close at the end of April, as it is planned to again get the digger up there to address some water issues. It is a DOC requirement that water run-off and mud is managed.
During the winter there will be some organised trips to plant trees and to cut back vegetation. Dates will not be decided until after the digger work is completed.

Neither can I, hindsight is just awesome!!!
Hope the current owner of the truck doesn't see these pic's, but here's some of the damage from the loop:

Took alot of digging, carefull manovouring and lots of hanging off the end of the winch to get it out looking like that
Another Safari that was with us was so badly damaged it got parked up and is still sitting in the truck yard in the same sorry state to this very day, it lost all its lights as all four corners were smashed in, all the windows down the drivers side were broken by what ever it was that got the C pillar on mine, busted engine mounts, the thing was farked

Re: Maratoto trail opens for '09 summer.
Just got the NZFWDA news letter and was distressed to read this;
Maintaining 4x4 trails to a practical environmental standard is probably the only way in the future that our recreation will be permitted to use public lands. We already face that with the 42nd Traverse, the Maratoto and Stadia trails. That maintenance costs money for machinery and materials and at present the only sources of funds are donations from users and grants from the NZFWDA. Just as an indication, the total donations from Maratoto for this summer are $614, but the estimated remedial maintenance cost is at least $1800.
When i went ther in late December with 4 trucks, we all stopped and paid at the start of the track. At $10 a truck that means 61.4 trucks went up there all season! Come on guys, we pay $55 a day at woodhill! The donation at these tracks is pitence! We are running the risk of losing access to all these wonderful trails.
All you guys rave about going there, but how many pay for the right? I don't mean to winge, but i believe in user pays.
We could all do better.
As a newbie to the scene, I'm afraid of some access being shut before i get a chance to see some better parts of New Zealand. Thanks alot.
Cheers.

Nope. by the video the Nissan had not got to the point in the photo. It was about 200m back from there I'm guessing. Anyhow it was not even to ABC rock but that's fine... I'm glad that they stopped there as it still leaves some adventure when they eventually go in better equipped.

Hey Rohan,
The boys have put together a DVD of the weekend for you. Tracks included are Wires Loop, Stadia and Thompsons. By the way got thru to Katikati on the Sunday of Easter at bout 3pm after having to winch a Terrano out of one of the bogs that someone had abandoned due to no winch etc. Where do you want me to send a copy of DVD for you.
Thanks for great day you organised for us...was good trip.
