Avoca to springfeild want to open

Post by Mud Hog »

Tried to find track from Avoca to springfeild over Torlesse range but wash outs were too bad for a sunday arvo. Easy track except for the wash outs. Planning to go back with more spade time. theres at least 3 washouts. Nice scenery!

Gotta ask, is it public land? Nice shots. I'd be keen to help out with sorting the trail.

Yes it is public land (DOC). That help sounds good! Although you would probably just drive it :D A working bee sounds good. Two other guys are keen.

I do wonder how you will get on when you reach the viaduct at Smuggler Cove as there is no track crossing there, just the train viaduct???

Al, looking at my maps I suspect it was either through Flock Hill or Craigeburn Road which leads onto the original "Coach Road" from yesteryear used before the trains went through, if Im not mistaken.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

I've been through from the springfield side by dirt bike :D :D :D through torless station(private land) to the via duct and the only way across is the train bridge as it's a big drop & the wimac is quite deep/ fast flowing in the gorge there. how ever it would be a good drive to via duct with minimal track work required although access would be req. from torless station. i would be keen to help but can't see how you would get past the viaduct/gorge?

pic of viaduct bridge.

You cant go through flock hill any more as I understand. Yeah thats the one Pete, down Craigeburn rd past 13 gates about 150 meters before the train bridge (which is a dead end) Road on the left which goes to Avoca homestead the trail goes up the hill behind the hut. Your right pete but there must be a way.

No, you can get to Avoca homestead off Craigeburn Rd, then drive up the river a fair way past the old coal mine but cant even get to the next hut but you can take another road to get to that hut.. I think you can also drive down the river but not sure how far yet. Nice wee spot for fishing or hunting. Yes it is run by D.O.C now so easy accsess. Cheers Simon
