How to check and replace diff oil?

Post by lincooln »

Hi all, If there is a post about this then I haven't seen it. I did search but couldn't find it.

In my Vitara (93, 5spd, g16a, carb) I wanted to check the diff oil, So first of all how do I go about this and second what am I looking for? colour, amount etc.

second How do I replace it? I saw that there is what look's like a drain plug on the underside of it, but it has a square fitting so what should i use to open it? what oil should I use in the diff?

I know these may be simple sounding questions but i never had anyone to teach me things like this.  Son any help would be great.

cheers

there should be a drain plug and a fill plug, square socket thingys may fit the plugs, make sure you can undo the fill plug first before taking out the drain plug.

to check the level undo the fill plug and stick finger in, if oil is milky replace it

when you refill , fill up to the level of the fill hole

do you have a socket set? There should be one at the bottom for draining the oil, one in the side, about half way up for filling. You undo them using your wrench and extension, without a socket on the end.Should be 1/2" or 3/4" socket set. The amount to put in will be up the side fill hole, recommend buying a Owners manual from ripco or super shit(cheap) this will explain all servicing for you and tell ya what oils to use.

Hi Lincolin,

Mate, it's easy. The plug half way up is to check it and fill. Use a 1/2 or 3/4 power bar to undo drain plug, (be careful not round the square). Let it all drain out and clean magnet on bung if fitted. Replace drain bung and open filler. Most gear oil bottles come with a tube in the lid. You can use this to fill the diff. Fill until level with the filler hole. Refit the bung and you're done.
You could always txt me if ya run into trouble. I got heaps of gear oil at my workshop if you want some. All this is done on the flat ground so as to fill it the right amount.
As I'm real fussy, I clean and degrease the threads and use a good liquid thread sealer to seal the bungs as I hate weeping any oil out at all! 8) 8) :) :)
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

drain it straight after a good long run when the diff and oil are still hot and it'll drain heaps easier and all the water and shit will be mixed up in the oil
