Navara Gear Boxes ???

Post by Navara_Man »

hey iv got a 1987 nissan navara ute (dble cab weldside), TD27 non turbo engine (i took the turbo out). Was a TD23 originally.

She is a bit slow, has a really low geared gear box in it, was wandering whether its just normal for these old gurls to top out at 95km at 3000 revs or if its the gear box!

she's awesome dont get me wrong and i dont care much about the speed just didnt think it was good for the engine???

great 4WD as im a hunter and farmer so is great for taking the family camping or out on the farm or towing the boat!!!

It was an upgrade from my old Isuzu MU workhorse i had which eventually died after 800,000kms on the clock!!!

Was hoping for a bit of knowledge about these engines and gear boxes thats all! (the gearbox is the original from the TD23 engine).

cheers

The boxes arent real strong, had to have two rebuilt before.cheap to get done though, they seem to run bearings. And yeh there very low geared.Prity sure mine would be screamin at 105kmh though.maybe fit bigger tyres? terrano box may have longer legs?

the rpm sounds fairly typical low gearing. my 2wd toyota 2.8 does 3200 rpm at 100km/h. a lot of those lower powered motors of that era where really low geared. however 4x4's sometimes are higher geared than their 2wd version.

The gearboxes are all the same from the D21's be it Terrano or Navara. The answer is in the diffs. Non turbo run 4.875:1 ratio, and turbo ones run 4.625:1. On the ID plate under the bonnet will tell you what you got. In the bottom right corner of the plate is the drive code e.g, CA48 or HG48 or HG46. I put turbo on my Terrano and changed diffs from the "small" CA48's to the bigger HG48's because i couldn't get a air-locker for the "CA's". Swinging 32 inch Simex's (actual 33.4 inch) the speedo is out a bit but in my favour for RUC! Now when speedo says 90km it's doing 100km/h. Hope this helps. Cheers Simon.
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

oh ok cool will look into that infon cheers guys!

ye the speedo reads about 20k's out anyway haha says your doing 120 but really only 100!!!

and why not another MU???
Will probably get another one to do up as a 4x4 build! but for a family/hunting wagon the navara does the trick for now, i know not really the flashest of trucks just ideal to take the kids to the beach or camping!

it screams about 3000rpm at 95km's, had a single cab 2.5 diesel rodeo a while ago which did the same too!!! could get up to about 120km's going down a hill with a tail wind haha!!!

planning on putting a snorkel on and front and back bull bars as well, now do i need certs for both of those???

my speedo runs 20 ks out not in my favor, hopefully 33's will sort that out,

you shouldnt need a cert for the bullbars, aslong as they dont go more than 100mm away from the body i have heard from several different people.
