Terrano 4WD Auto - Help

Post by fbndecor »

We have only had our 1999 Terrano 4WD a short time, and today our daughter put it into 4Lo and we are unable to get it out. It has a dial which goes from 2wd - Auto - 4Hi (push) - 4Lo. When trying to select any other gear, the 4Lo light flashes. The orange 'lock' light on the dash is on. What do we do? :? This has never happened before, it usually goes into the other gears first pop, but we dont know what she pushed, and she cant remember. Also can someone tell us what is the switch beside the handbrake on the centre console. It glows orange when turned on but the writing has rubbed off and we dont know what it is for, Thanks in advance

Have you tried putting the Gear into N first before changing it back to 2H.

Also some vehicles with Auto hubs require you to reverse for a wee bit to unlock the hubs after its been in 4wd.

Yep, just as Jerry said, put the gearbox into Neutral to shift from 4 Lo to 2Hi etc. You only need to drive 1/2 meter or so to unlock the auto hubs.
Oh, and never drive in 4 Hi or 4 Lo on a sealed road, it will bind up the drive chain.
What part of the country are you from, someone may be able to pop over and see you to put things right?
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Thanks for your help guys - obvious when you know how! None of the people I phoned told me that, and I have always done it in park so didn't even think of that. Maybe because my daughter engaged it from neutral (she is used to a manual) it had to be disengaged the same way. All good now :D Cheers, Linda

Do you have a camera to take a photo of the switch beside the handbrake? Terrano's have many different combination of switches so a picture should be able to help us further?

If you have the top spec model Terrano it is potentally the seat heater/warmer, althou I would think there would be 2 identical switches, one for driver and one for passanger. I beleive the R50 model came out with them, because the older D21 model top spec model has them.

Flick it on and drive for 10 mins and see if your seat warms up
