terrano questions

Post by surf_tomo »

Ive read most of the posts on here about the fuel economy of the petrol v6 terranos, and peoples opinions certianly vary.

After taking into account RUC, rego, servicing costs, is running a petrol still considerably more expensive?

Obviously its a v6 and going to use gas, but the power and no diesel bull#### appreals to me (after owning 2 surfs)

On the whole are they good strong engines? Most on Trademe have 200+ km on them, do they do high kms?

also, can you drop out a auto box and put a manual in, and vice versa without too much trouble?

Ta, Tom.

The VG30 was voted motor of the decade for the 90's so that about sums up the motor. It is used in alsorts of things from Terrano's to Maxima and 300z and later on as a quad cam in the 300zx.
200k isn't a big deal as long as cam belt has been done. At those k's I'd be more concerned with the condition of the auto (if auto). They have a life expectancy of 200 to 300k before major service, (or rebuild if you don't do it before it comes apart).
The one I have was cheaper to run than a 4.0l Falcon I had at the same time. It was also cheaper to run than a TD42t Safari. Obviously it is deaer than a TD27t but the performance difference is huge!!!!

Personally i think there are a very good option and has far better performance than a 3.0 Surf.
Nissan Terrano coilovers, turboed VH45, Safari axles, and some other stuff.

One thing to watch out for is the exhaust manifolds have a habit of warping from heat. I have had to fix this on two VG30 Terrano's I owned.

The exhaust mainfold studs break and need replacing as said above. The alternator is down low so stuffs up heaps when muddy, carry a replacement and learn how to replace the brushes. The only bad thing I found is the CPU is under the passenger seat and doesn't like water, apart from that I used to put mine through bonnett depth water all the time. Good powerful motor as well.

My work mate has a manual one thats just ticked over 300ks an is still running very strong. It has lazy lifters when it starts cold an the gearbox which is apparently untouched has a slight clunk in 2nd when you back off the throttle (not sure what that is  ) but apart from that it is a good truck an the v6 sounds pretty cool too

cheers guys, some good infomation here. I have read about the exhaust manifolds. I will be looking for a manual one preferably. By the sounds of it they are a fairly robust engine. Bro had a diesel auto one, and i really liked it.
