Cruiser axle lengths?

Post by Sadam_Husain »

I busted the rear long axle in my truck (70 series) about 18 months ago, I borrowed a 40 series axle to get home then brought a second hand axle that I presume was also a 40 series.

I've been running around like this ever since and became aware a few months ago that the 70 series is 20mm wider wheelbase than the 40 series.

Does this make the axles a different length or is the 20mm offset in the hub? Is my axle just catching in the diff spline and needing replacing with a longer axle? Is only one axle longer?

Any info anyone has would be appreciated.

from what i understand, like you said, the extra width between the 40 and the 70 diffs should be all in the long side of the half axle..

i have a 60 and a 40 that i've been playing around with measurements and 50mm longer is how that works.. not entirely sure  about the 70 but thought it may give you a bit of an angle to work with..

I found this site http://home.comcast.net/~dtay/axle_specs.html that shows the 70 front short axle the same length as a 40 axle. The long axle's are 1/32 inch different and the cv's are the same (my 70 series is a 1985)

Offroad.com http://www.off-road.com/tlc/faq/axle.html identify the difference in axle widths but dont specify where the difference is?

I never kept my broken 70 axle so I cant compare the length to a 40 axle
