Re: Waikato Thompson Track
Only takes a day of rain to make it pretty slick. I've pulled heaps of mall prowling 4x4s out up there as they thought/were told it was easy as. Just make sure you have a strap and a spade at least for if you do get adventurous. I took a shiney 413 a few weekends ago now on road tyres and used the right side but it was nice and dry. If its raining I don't do the last section usually cos if you don't make it through that middle section on the right you have to reverse all the way back which is a bit dodgy.
Re: Waikato Thompson Track
my bro and i will be there in an escudo, 9 am. early start for us

We were pulling that surf out of a water hole at the play area. They drowned their engine. Young fella drove into it on purpose
because we were there to pull them out. Battery was flat/farked.
They had no recovery gear or tools, (or idea??!!)
I pulled them out of the water and left them to walk out to teach them a lesson

Good day, very casual.
Cheers.
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

Hey xj. I saw the photos on the weekend thread of this little Saturday drive. The track where you guys are driving next to clear fell; is that the old loop? Is it open again? is there more skid tracks in there or is the original layout still there?
cheers
Jase.

Only part left of the old loop is memories pal. Its just a track down to a skid and then back up again. Theres one stretch of about 150mtrs that takes you back up the old entry/exit opposite the 2nd playground, and thats about it. However, i reckon the old loop used to drop over to the left further of the current drive to the skid, where pines are still standing. If so its possible a fair part of the track may still be there.

Re: Waikato Thompson Track
yea safari got threw, think he drove home that night, lots of streams on the waikato side to fill up the beast, we left that red hilux there over night, he cooked his electrics, white hilux also was over heating by half way up kati side, the paj broke it pto winch wen he was winching safari out of that deep bog just befor the rock face, and i bent my 1 side of my bar back into a front quater pannel

Re: Waikato Thompson Track
hey just curious about this track??? is it easier from the kati side or the waikato side ???
Iv done the track up whakamarama, down the line from katikati wasnt too bad, a little edgy in some places though and a bit tight!
just wana go for a blast one day! iv got a 1987 Nissan Datsun ute, TD27 non turbo. Done alot of off roading up the bush (Bonnet Pig Hunter) and down the coast and on the farms iv been on just curious what to expect! nothing worse then going some where un-prepared and getting stuck and having too be pulled, a bit shame really! has dunlop super grippers on it!
should i have much Trouble ????

You'd be a keen man to give it a go. But if you are mad,.......go for it

I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!
Re: Waikato Thompson Track
Don't even try Kati kati side unless you have a reliable winch and probably not wise to try alone either. It can be a truck breaker if you are not careful.

Re: Waikato Thompson Track
Marototo (or the wires as it is also known) is a good track with various levels of difficulty. There is a $10 donation that goes into the box at the start of it. A lot of work has and still is going into the restoration of this track, so if you go up please respect it. The best idea for you would be to join the BOP club and join them on their organised trips. They have a lot of forestry runs on during the winter too. There is the TECT park becoming available at some stage soon too.

Re: Waikato Thompson Track
are you sure about 2000lb as that would not even pull my niva out of a puddle. could it be a typo and be a 20000lb or are you saying 2000kgs?

Re: Waikato Thompson Track
I did easy side over to bombsite last weekend.........Fuk doing it again in anything less than a challenge truck
I'm not sure if that much winching of a truck would be enjoyable
It was obvious in some places that nothing had been through for a while.
Also found some very fresh deer sign at the bombsite.

A well set up club truck can do it. It certainly isn't a novice track, but is quite enjoyable if you know which way to tackle the holes. It is preferable that you go with someone that has done it before so they can navigate the better path through the holes; especially the bomb site. Straight through is not the solution. Some of those holes are bottomless.
On a little thread jack, if you don't mind. If anyone wants to do the Kati kati site in the next three weekends, I would be keen. Any takers in well set up trucks with reliable winch keen?
