Brake problems

Post by cruiser_beast »

Morning all.

I am having problems on my toyota landcruiser 70 series shortie. Its got the 3f, 4l engine. The problem is with the brake sytem. I top up the resivoir for brake fluid, and it slowly creeps down, and i might top it up a little bit, before i go out, and after the drive, the brake resiovor is full and over flowing.....hmmm. Is this because my brake master cylinder has had it and is leaking brake fluid back into the brake booster, hereby making the level low as it has technically left the place it should be, and then being sqeeuzed back into the master cylinder from the being inside the brake booster, thus makin the level high?

Any help would be nice to help me figure out why its doing that???i.e is this just a master cylinder problem and just require me to get a new one or a rebuild kit to rebuild it, or is this a brake booster problem?and will i have to replave both units?

sweet thanks:)

if you can offer any suggestions that would be great.

hi
before rushing out and buyin bits check for a seized wheel cyliner thats releasing when cold, seizing on when hot. One of the easieat ways to check is to go for a deceit drive getting the brakes warm then finding a flat gravel patch driving at a resonable speed (20ks will do it ) then stomp on the brakes. All four should lock up, inspect the skid marks all four should have come on together and should be of equal lenght. And be straight. Its unlikely to to be the brake booster as there (or should not) contain any fluids. If you pull the master cylinder off and find brake fluid in the booster then the master cylinder is at fault. Check for anysigns of brake fluild at the inside of the brake drums or wheels or the disc calliphers

brake problems

Post by cruiser_beast »

i pulled the valve off the brake booster today that had the vacumn pipe going into it, to inspect the inside of the booster and sure enough theres brake fluid in the booster! A lot of it too! its prob half full, well we assume its full past the point of the brake cylinder to be able to push it back into it somehow.

The brake fluid is not leaking back through the booster and onto the pushrod and into the car though , down the pedal system. Which hopefully means the diafram set up in the booster is still all good, so i have to take it apart and drain all the fluid out of the booster and inspect the brake cylinder "cups" i was told, so ill have a look into that soon.

Cheers Dj for the advice.
