TD42 intercoolers - whos using one?

Post by Hombrey »

Guys I've got some spare cash and thinking about intercooling my turbo. I'm using it both on and off road. I'm interested in knowing who has put an intercooler into a turboed td42 and what did you use? Top mount, air to air/water to air specs etc and how have you found it. What would you do differently? Just after some ideas before I spend the money.

Cool thanks. Have been looking at the other sites but was interested in any local opinions/experience to see how people have found them.

I grabed one of these, going to make a hybrid subaru one with the water pump and radiator from an early legacy. got the bits just need the shed space hahaha to fit it in.

Hey thanks Gary. Well after a bit of reading I've done the same thing and got the early legacy IC, radiator and pump. Was looking at one of those trade me IC's but decided to go with the full legacy kit given it was only $90 for all parts including shipping!!. Decided I'd try it with all legacy bits and see how it goes and if the legacy IC can't do it, then I'll spend the bucks and upgrade to a similar intercooler. Any reason you have not gone with the Legacy IC as well? Also tossing up wether to front mount the IC or scoop the bonnet and mount the cooler with a pull fan under the bonnet.

hey i reckon front mount the radiator for the system as the engine fan should be enough pull at the front for slow 4wd speeds, also remember heat rising in the engine bay at slower speeds so it keeps the radiator away from that as well.

i was also considering having a scoop to blow down onto the inter cooler as well to help at the higher speeds on the open road, particularly climbing hills at 100km/h.

from what i can remember of the figures i found at the time the legacy inter coolers are good for up to 420 cfm and the td42's (depending on the boost and other mods) need at least 460 cfm, so i didn't want to be starving the motor.

i would be interested in how yours goes with the legacy inter cooler. what sort of boost are you running??

Oh Ok. Re the radiator placement. At present I don't run a fan but have two separately switched thermos on the front of the radiator that push the air through if i need them to. Typically only switch them on if going very slow or hard uphill. otherwise the truck stays pretty cool without a fan. That creates probs with front mounting the IC radiator cos I'd have to move the fans and they are not the typical plastic easy mounts but rather metal wire meshed beasts tack welded in place. Heaps of room on the engine bay side but don't see putting it there makes sense. Am running 13lb of boost at present but need to cut and reweld the actuator so I can take it up to 15 or so. I have two bonnets so cutting a hole won;t kill me and the truck is not exactly prestine (read dinged plenty and driven plenty both on and off road). The IC is just to control EGT's so I can push more fuel in. be keen on any other options to get more out of this motor. Very happy with power gains so far.
