Ex army 109

Maybe silly questions but I see quite a few ex army 109s for sale at the moment. How well do these drive on the road and would they be reliable enough as a daily driver (as long as not abused)?

Secondly - how capable are they off road? What is the normal things to look for when checking one out and what would normally break (when being slightly abused)?

Any good websites with details on them?

Very reliable and pretty comfortable, considering they are set up for squaddies and not joe public.

I normally cruise at about 95-100km/hr on the open road.

Secondly - how capable are they off road? What is the normal things to look for when checking one out and what would normally break (when being slightly abused)?

I often raise eyebrows with what I get through in mine.

This is mine. That was some time ago and since then I have got better tyres - Bridgestone D671 - and a PTO winch.

As you'll see in the video, the tyres I had were fine in the mud but once they got onto wet rock they were useless.



Since then, too, I have replaced the ignition system with a Pertronix II coil and Igniter. Egggsssellent.

Front diff, front axles/CVs, not much else to break really. The electrics are easily drowned when wading, especially if it has the army speed limiter in the nearside guard.

I have more than slightly abused mine. Those are the things I have ruined.

this was my first wheeler.. my bro's spent a bit of time gettin it all goin again and is keen to get it dirty.. loves cruisin around in it.. slow old dot it is.. its not a v8 one though, but still oozes 'oober cool'..

Ah. That's in the back, flat on the floor. I've got one of those black polythene tool boxes bolted to where the radios used to be and the tyre sits nicely under it. I hold it in place with the spare wheel bracket that normally holds the spare to the rear of the bulkhead, but of course it's fixed to the floor and not the bulkhead.

I got real sick, real quick, of not being able to see over the damn wheel

Another option is that with the ute there is a fitting so that the spare can sit vertically alongside the trayback. The bracket then attached to the top of the coaming.

Has/does anybody put the V8s out ex army Rovers into SWB landrover? wouldnt they be better offroad? sure as hell look better!

thanks guys.. and looking quickly at the two links HEAPS of reading to do. As far as fitting snorkels and the like is it down to downpipes or still sell accessories?

Anyone have one of these in Wellington I can take a for a drive?

Snorkels, well before you get the deep into the water you need to waterproof the electrics But yeah, 4" pipe out the left side, up through guard and up by the windscreen. There are kits you can buy and specific tophats and mushrooms for the top of the pipe, but the cost is not really worth it. It's more fun to make yer own

There are, of course, heaps of toys you can stick on. They really are like mechano.

There are a couple I know of in and around Wellie. billingtond on the Stage 1 V8 forum is down that way I think.
