Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..
Again I will chant my mantra,
education, education, education. If I had of found those jokers on the old man range, I would have cut their nuts off. The actual track is so much easier then the side tracks that shouldn't be there. I feel that those 4wd tour books have done more damage to the environment because most people who own a 4wd wouldn't have known about them if they hadn't bought the books, especially those that drive up there with road tyres, how can they be taken seriously. I won't let trucks with road tyres on any trips I organise.

the truth about the media
I've just read the article about this incident, and well, what can I say.
Basically, it comes to the old adage that sensationilised news sells, and if newspapers have no money, they have no jobs. The article knew Matt's online name, and had read his posts, yet given the option to therefore ask for his side of the story, chose not to. This is true of all media, and if you watch or read any news, when you look for it, it's as plain as day. The media is no longer about news, it's about who can come up with the most "exciting" or "best angle" for the given story, to keep their producers/editors happy, and therefore sell newspapers/advertising.
You only have to look at (no offence to the ladies) womens magazines or "tabloids" who are perhaps a little less subtle about it.
What can we do about it? Pretty much nothing. Even an official complaint would achieve little, maybe a 3rd page 4 line apology, but the damage has already been done. As I said in another post, dont worry, they'll find something more "sensational" to whine about in a little while, and it'll all blow over. Remember all the hoohaa about "dirty dairying"(damaging fishing rivers), or "underage prostitutes"? All ancient history......
They found their next "angle".

Actually that represents an incomplete quote; you overlooked to add:
"As far as I'm concerned they were totally irresponsible".
(B. Maguire, 2006)
Unfortunately we have morons up here as well...
As Far as I know this guy involved was not part of any club up here, which damages the relationship(s) the local clubs have with the council involved as well as the regional council etc....The publicity was not welcomed by the 4wd club fraternity here. I consider ORE to be a "club" as well given it has members and holds regular trips with experienced people.
There was an incident a few month previous where another moron drove thru a council planted area of native trees and got stuck and sent a mate to recover his truck when the council turned up, this guy who got stuck was not a member of any club etc.....a club member from (???) was passing and turned up to help and had to turn the situation round and tell the council who were rightly pi55ed and thought all 4wd'er were like this...
To my knowlledge both of these guys didn't have any book thrown at them or even a slap on the hand with a wet bus ticket etc....
PS I'm not bagging "club" trips (which include the organised trip in page 1 of this post) here, just the uneducated people that decide to go off somewhere by themselves where they shouldn't, I find it strange that "4wd clubs are bagging ORE as it is a NZ wide club and has members from "clubs" (which include myself as well as a number of people on this forum) and "non club" alike, I would seriously challenge anything raised in any "club" meeting (including the club I belong to) that is deragotory to ORE, the simple fact is that it was an organised "club" trip by a mixture of experience, incidents happen even on "club" trips, the fact is here that you had help there and weren't eg out by yourself.
The press in general have a lot to answer for, in most cases it is considered "newsworthy" even though the info they publish may not show the real story....

70 series prado (KZJ78) and 90 Series Prado (KZJ95)
Good call Jerry, You are right the damage that people that you call 'morons' do, do impact on the entire 4WD community, their careless or stuppid acts do get into the press and do create hassles for Clubs NZ4WD assn Combined Clubs and other organisations who do do a lot of work with councils and the like, so we should not bag those organisations for I think if it was not for the work they do we all may not have any where to go! I think that is a fact.
Again Jerry, you makes good sense, we all on this forum should take notice and when we do go out there lets not any of us look like or act like or be a moron that he refers to.

Nor should they deemed above scrutiny, answerability, or reproach.

quote from steve_t647
I am not sure why there is so much attention in this, you did the right thing and came home safley, a recent trip in the south island was well organised but one unprepaired vehicle and a lot of other mistakes ended up the death of a very expierienced 4wdriver.
Yes needswork, clubs clubs clubs.
While I honestly mean NO disrespect to anyone unfortunate enough to be involved with the above incident, it's a very sad loss to the deceased persons friends and family, this just goes to show that being a member of a club means squat at the end of the day. Tell the deceased persons family how wonderful and safe club organisation is.

Club or no club isn't the issue to me. Its another version of the haves Vs have not argument (eg. up to 33" v 35" tyres, PTO v Electric) there is valid points on both sides.
Personal responsibility and common-sense are the things that sometimes get lost. Sometimes it seems that people abdicate these things in a event being organised for them ?
tragic events do happen, I've seen it. All the equipment helps but the most important piece of safety equipment in anyones vehicle is yourself
just trying to give my view without sounding too heavy

War (noun) 1 Strife (especially between countries) involving military, naval, or air attacks. 2 open hostility between people 3 a strong effort to combat crime or disease or poverty etc
Thats the Oxford definition of 'War'
Sorry, mentioned "Club" word and somehow it got confused with "war!?"
Great song of the 70's
" WAR what is it good for? absolutly nothing.
Say it again; WAR what is it good for? absolutly nothing!"

I'm interested to know how would members of ORE and the general public know combined clubs even exsists

Advertising through the site is readily available over half a million page views last month and over 400 thousand already this month, educating us "goons"

Ahhh, but you take me too literally Grasshopper - the intent of my quote* was only to illustrate by parody that some words (e.g. "club") have high latent emotion-quotient. When you can walk the path of ORE, and leave more modest trail of "club", you will have learned.

*Seriously, apology if my ... errrrh, 'unique' sense of humour caused any confusion or offense. Yep, great to see Dr Who on the idiot box once again.
