terrano torsion bar settings?

Hi can anyone give me some advice on setting the correct height on the front torsion bars on an old d21 terrano.
I am looking to wind up my bars and I was wondering how far I can do before I go over the original measurements. I was told you measure it from the top of the bump stops is this the case.
Any detailed advice would be gratefully recieved.
