Suzuki SJ413V 1988
Hi guy's,
Currently looking at getting a 4wd again. Not intended to be a daily driver but road legal and cheap to run machine for accessing hunting areas etc.
Have seen a 1988 SJ413V on trademe that looks pretty good - 155,000kms. Just want to know are these pretty bullet proof and are spares i.e. drive train, engines etc readily available incase something does go wrong?
Sorry for the all questions but have only ever had Toyota 4wds before so a newbie with the Zuk info!

Good for spares, and pretty bulletproof if you're not going hard-core. Otherwise they'll need a few mods (like any 4x4).
Relatively cheap to run and just watch for rust in the body on the older ones.
They will amaze you where they can go!

Is that the red one??
I saw that if it is. Pretty tidy from the pics but there might be some rust bubbles in the passenger rear corner where they normally get it. Hard to see in the pic. Parts are easy to get, super easy to work on yourself as everything is small light and simple. Very capable offroad as they are but with a few mods can be excellent.

Says its done a heap more k's than they say but most have been to the moon and back now. I wouldn't worry too much unless the motor is tired, gearbox real noisy etc etc. Have to look at it.

yip its the red one on trade me at the moment. Looks pretty tidy and sounds like spares and any maintenance work should be straight forward which is great.
I dont know anyone up that way to take a look though so might just see how the auction goes and keep an eye on things.
Looking at a couple of Escudos/Vitara's as well which are a bit closer to home. Wouldnt be looking to modify them at all just put a set of mud tyres on what ever I get and use it as is.
Thanks for the replies.

I would go sj well before vitara personally but thats just my preference. They're stronger and more capable in stock configuration from my experience.

No, from that report the kms are genuine and as quoted. You will see that on several occasions the inspections record an odo reading 100,000 too light due to the five-digit odo, but a steady increase through to 155kms stacks up. (The pictorial graph is the best way to see this).

ahh shit indeed I stand corrected. I usually just look at the km increase column. My bad.

Fairly well known that suzukis only have 5 digit speedos, seller admits they are unsure how many times round the clock its been. Being that it had a rebuild at 70,000km ago I would imagine that would well outlast the life expectancy of the body (rust wise)

Re: Suzuki SJ413V 1988
well walking down the street going for a beer after work last night i saw another SJ413 advertised for sale parked in the main street of Queenstown. Rang and left a message but the owner was from Amberley in Canterbury and drove home last night.
I have a guy going to take a look at it tommorow for me but the guy selling it seemed like a really honest joker on the phone. The only mechanical problem he said he was aware of is a leak from the front main seal.
He say's it shouldnt be a difficult thing to replace but that you might as well do the cambelt etc at the same time. Anyone on here have an idea what sort of cost i'd be looking at for that?
Cheers

Can you do the work yourself?
Manual here http://www.suzukiinfo.com
parts here http://www.suzispares.com got heaps of parts from these guys
job not hard to do, if you've got mechcanial skills.
Check it all over EVERYWERE for rust , but shouldn't be to bad if it's from inland

Re: Suzuki SJ413V 1988
Thanks for all the replies guys. Had a mate check out the one I saw passing through Queenstown and he says it seems pretty straight.
Flying up to ChCh on Wednesday to pick her up and drive back down.
Will post a few pics when I get it here.

I've done cambelts etc on a couple of the 8-valve 1600s, which are virtually the same engine.
To do the timing belt, tensioner/idler bearing, water pump and main seal cost me, from memory, around $350 in parts (including new coolant).
Relatively easy job PROVIDED you follow the FWSM for setting it up properly on reassembly.

Re: Suzuki SJ413V 1988
Well picked her up ok from ChCh and had a good cruise back to Cromwell to get used to the old girl!
Seems to be pretty straight and everything functions ok but there is definitely an oil leak coming from behind the cam cover.
I have found some info about replacing the cam belt and it does sound reasonably straight forward. I have been told the seal likely to be leaking is "the front main seal".
Can anyone shed any further light on what/where this seal is exactly and how straight forward it is to replace? I'm assuming that once the cam cover, tensioner and belt etc are out of the way it should be pretty obvious?
A couple of pics of the new machine below.
