BJ74, shinyish POS

Post by Fakey »

Well as most who care know I sold my 40 on the weekend  , I needed a good daily/tow wagon so today I bought a Bj74 turbo diesel cruiser. Spent 3 hours cleaning it, removing the one remaining side step, an rewiring the cd player  .
Its got a pto winch(which may get stolen for the next 40  ) an some sweet 30" tyres  the only planned mods at this stage are a cd player that plays farken cds, rock sliders, snorkel an 33' mud tyres oh an remove the diving board front bumper

Ill get some pics up tomorrow when my cameras charged

Image

Dont think the 36"s will fit
Image

Road tyres are shit, winch works well tho

Could be something to try my new plasma cutter out on

Took the 70 on its 1st road trip yesterday (new plymouth to auckland an back), Its got a few issues. The 1st was the temp guage would go right up to the high mark, so Id stop shut it off an check the engine wasnt actually getting hot or boiling. Oil burning off the motor is a pretty good indicator that its getting very hot, but all was well so Id get back in an start her up. Temp would go back to normal. then the temp an fuel guage would both go right up. Think Ive got some wiring shorts to look for :(
The other issue developed when I was climbing up mt messenger the engine developed a rather loud rattle. I thought id run a bearing at 1st but being stuck in the middle of no where I thought fark it turned my Ipod up louder an kept going. The noise gradually quietened down. Now it sounds alot like fuel knock from a dodgy injector which would explain all the black smoke :(

Pics to come when it stops raining

Sweet!! You'll be happy once the new wheels go on. Pretty keen going out in the mud with those 30's. :D
Are you going to put wheel spacers on with the new wheels? When I put them on my truck, it was great getting full steering lock back. Sucked without it.

Mine used to do this. Freaked me out the first time it happened, never did bother to fix it just put an aftermarket temp gauge in

Haha sounds like a pretty common prob then. Was thinking it might be a bad earth somewhere behind the dash. Might just put in another guage

Hi Mate, Skid should have remembered mine doing the same thing, was a short in the wiring under the airfilter where the loom is mounted to the inner gaurd.

Ever wondered if 35"s will fit on a stock 70. Need the small wheels to get the 45 into my garage so put the 35"s on the 70 an I couldnt turn the farkin wheels more than a 1/4 turn  but it looked cool
Image
Jacked up a little an tyres hit the guards about an inch before the axle hits the bumpstops, tyres about 1 foot off the ground.

Rear guard

The rear diff on the 45 is a 70 series full floater with an airlocker so thatll be going in this once I find a 80 series rear diff for the 45.
I removed the ugly chrome rear bumpers aswell, Ill chop up the front sometime soon too

Put some 27mm spacers on the hubs and you'll get back most of your steering lock.

Nah Ill look for some 33"s the 35"s hit the bolts that hold the mud flaps on the rear of the front guard. I could move the front diff forward 25 to 30mm then Id have to lift it an chop the guards but this is supposed to be my daily driver that I dont have to do much too

I had a look thru one of the forums, think it was pirate? There were a few good 70 series threads with good info on fitting 35s but most of them were using narrow simexs but they had minimal suspension lifts an trimmed guards

Yeah they are the a/ts off the 45 that are on this 70 in the pics on page one.
Not too sure what theyre worth there are 5 of them, the spare has never been on the road, two are a little more worn than the other two due to being on the back of a v8 45
They are on black 10" rims that were bought new with the tyres.
Im really after mud tyres for the 70 but i am open to offers

Chuck the air locker & diff head already in the 45 into the 80 series rear housing - same size 8)

Better idea to have a locker in your bush truck than the tow wagon.

Yeah thats the long term plan, Ill try find a 80 diff with lsd. The Lsd will be swapped for the locker once the 45 is back on the road but in the mean time Ill just put it in the 70

On second thoughts you should sell the air locker incredibly cheap to someone who is building a brown FJ40 bush truck - that is a much better plan
