homemade snorkels
hi there, has any of you lot made one of those chopped down pipe snorkels where you split a steel tube down the middle and weld in a plate the length of it creating a low profile tube??

Re: homemade snorkels
turns out that a 90mm dia tube with a chunk cut out 70 mm wide is the same area as a 3inch tube. that must drop the profile down a bit so it wont stick out so far

Re: homemade snorkels
Is this for the Zuk or the Playdoh?
if its the zuk can you run the intake through the firewall and mount a pod filter so something inside the cab?

Re: homemade snorkels
use PVC. heat along length with heat gun and then press into ground to create flat spot.
Just be careful because it burns out heat guns.

Re: homemade snorkels
I have a 2" snorkel you can have chrome, its the one on my green sj. Will be ok for what you want, but im going to 2 1/2" now because of the 4age

Re: homemade snorkels
Why do you need to flatten it?
I have a 3" dia steel snorkel on my 90 series Playdoh and the same size on the new surf build and both them are contained within the front guard and only exit as they go up the pillar. No noticebale blind spot on the Playdoh, but there will be a slight one on the surf as I have to allow for the exo cage as well.

Re: homemade snorkels
Here's the one I made for the Prado, but the surf one will look better I reckon. I personally think a big ugly arsed hunk of pipe hanging off the side of your rig looks like shit, which is why I spent farkin ages making them fit inside the gaurds.

Re: homemade snorkels
Must admit, I do like the of that when compared to the full length snorkel.
Anyone know who has made one for a VX like that?

Re: homemade snorkels
ha fair call. im thinkin now just cutting the tube parrelel down its lenght and inverting the offcut. itl give a inside corner to fit down the piller and keep it in nice and close, at the endof the day if i dont like it some plonker on trade me probably will,

Isn't Rokhounds running inside the guard, not the engine bay though?
Re: homemade snorkels
Dead right Dave. It runs inside the guard, only goes into the engine bay at the air filter canister.

Rokhound, Do you have any photos of the snorkel inside the guard or how you bent the snorkel as it goes through the guard and turns to head forward?
Yours looks bloody tidy.
Re: homemade snorkels
On the Prado it was a mission form hell. Just below the level of the guard there was something like 23 cuts and bends and I had to reduce the 3" wall to a D shape with a 68mm radius. I don't think I got any pics of it, but will have a look.
The surf is a different matter and is just going through the finishing touches now. You have to chop a reasonable amount off the firewall/bulkhead cowl that is just under the guard, but you can reinstate the metal further in. I'll get some pics of that when I get some time and flick them up here.

Re: homemade snorkels
Cheers Rok, would be good to see a few pics. Would be good to see/read more on your surf build too.

Re: homemade snorkels
Better late than never, I finally got some pics of the new snorkel setup on the Mutt.
With the inner guard on and the snorkel mounted to it. I had to chop a reasonable amount out of the scuttle area where the drain is.

And with the guard on. I wanted to be able to remove the front clip complete with the snorkel, airbox and both inner and outer guards as one unit, so the snorkel itself does not connect to the a pillar at all.

Re: homemade snorkels
hey dude.
Nice idea but the problem is you'll very greatly reduce the strength of that guard.
only an issue if you intend to rub up against stuff with it i guess.
