Godley Glacier 6th/7th-8th August. - FULL

Post by Taz »

Hey all.

Time to cement some plans for this as August is now just around the corner!

This is not an interest thread. You are either coming or your not at this point so either let me know in this thread or via PM.

There is the option of staying in Tekapo on the Friday night or you can come straight there on the Saturday.
If you are interested in staying in Tekapo on the Friday PM me with your contact details and how many people you are bringing and we will sort a house or 2 depending on numbers.

12 truck limit. Will up this if people think there is room for more but approx 24 people is already a few to have mulling around a hut.

I understand this is a Grade 2 with the option of driving some more difficult bits that can be classed as Grade 5, so there is something for everyone.

Family friendly trip.

Meeting point is:

The Shell station in Tekapo (aka Tekapo Services) at 9-930am on Saturday the 7th of August.
Map

If you want to drive down on the Sat from Chch I suggest you meet at the Rolleston BP and depart by 6am

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

Al Bundy has mentioned that the river can get reasonably high so snorkels will be required
Front and rear tow hook.
Your own recovery gear.
First Aid kit.
Suitable footwear for a 30min to an hour depending on smokers  walk and campsite/hut.
Food for 4 days (some extra noodles would and a tin or two or something to chuck in them would do), just in case.
Cooking equipment.
Fuel if you feel its applicable to your truck.
WARM CLOTHING and plenty of it.
Your own rubbish home with you. Idea is you leave the place better than you find it.
Firewood

TENT!
There is a hut but depending on numbers on the day and who is already in there by the time we arrive you may not get a bunk.
I would like everyone who is not sleeping in their truck to have their own, or too have arranged to share with others.

WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING IF YOU CAN:

Fire Extinguisher.
PRS Radio. We will be using channel 19.
Chains.
Camp cooker if you want to cook your own food and not wait for the hut cooker to be free.

Do people want to all chip in for the dinner on the Sat and brekkie on the sun or just eat their own food?

I would like the house booked and the deposit paid by the first week of July so get in quick. If we run out of room its a first paid first served basis.

So, I only really do trips with a couple of mates and don't really do a day by day blow unless tramping so bear with my attempt at a lose one! Al might be able to tidy it up a bit.

Day 1: We knock the Glacier drive then walk on the head with a 30min stop for lunch at a suitable spot around 12-1pm.
To Macauley hut hopefully before dark to setup camp then take it from there.
There will be plenty of places to walk for a gander if its still bright or rocks to play on if your that way inclined or maybe some hard work sinking some beers, bearing in mind there will be kids and possibly other people in the hut, so courtesy is a must!
People have expressed interest in having a shot. No bother with me but as the trip leader Al has the final say on all decisions related to firearm use and beyond.
Bring your license or leave your gun at home.

Day 2: Breakfast at 7:30am, off by 8:30am to have a nosey at some side tracks, play in the snow or have a crack at some rocks, then hit the road for home.

I will need your contact details i.e. cell number to inform of a cancellation due to extreme weather. If that happens, the trip will be run the following weekend if a good number can still make it.

I have probably missed a few things, maybe more than a few but that is the guts of it.

Everyone bring a sack of firewood please, I will get a bag of coal. Firearms are cool as long as the usual rules are followed. If you are not using them to hunt, keep the farkers locked in your truck. Their will be kids around. You'll have time to go for a hunt on the Sunday morning, those mad enough to get up that early in the cold.

Already had you fellas on the list mate

Well we have managed to get all the spots filled pretty quickly :!:

There is almost always 1 or 2 who pull out last minute so watch this space if your still keen and have missed out.
I would like to bring more trucks but I'm just trying to consider the amount of people we are going to end up with at the hut at one time, and also the fact that we want to be able to knock the glacier on the head before dark for those that have to pitch a tent.

Got a few questions that someone maybe able to help with, I think Al might be back in Oz now and he'd have all the answers?

What sort of fire does Macauley hut have, size type etc (I think were camping at Macauley hut?) I was going to see if I could grab a bit of rata or matai that burns nice and hot but I'd need to know how small/big to split it up?

Would I be right in thinking it would be better to have chains than not have chains even if it means buying a set that would probably only ever get used once, would one pair for the front be adequate of is it better to stick a set on each end?

Are there any vehicle preparation tips that I dont know about that I should know about, I'm petrol not diesel?

theres a chain thread already going so any chain info might be better over there?

Haven't gone just yet, going next wednesday morning. For the petrol motor, just make sure its waterproof. It is a stove up at MacCauley hut. There is a website for it, not sure if it has pics of the stove though. As for the cahins, I wouldn't get to concerned about it, I'm not. But if you do, only get one set, that's all I ever use.

If anyone in Christchurch wants some 35x12.5 ladder snow chains from CPS, hardly used. I have a set you can have for $200.

Was down there last weekend, at red stag hut. good bit of snow around. minus 10. real hard on batteries. river crossings are low and will be untill the spring melt. Chains not necessary unless a massive snow goes through.
Macaully a motel in the middle of nowwhere, pays to take some firewood. iI you sleeping outside in a tent you will need plenty of insulation from the snow and or the frozen ground.

It's a medium size wood burner - just remember to dampen it down - it sounds like a jet engine when going full tit

Also those bunk mattresses are covered in vinyl - noisy as hell.
