projecta typhoon air compressor mod

Post by tweake »

i found the projecta typhoon air compressor outlet to be extremely hot even with short use. eg blew up one tire and it was almost hot enough to burn my hand. i suspect the standard hose was getting a bit cooked. the compressor heads where only warm.
as the hose is a weak point with these i fitted an extension to help keep the hose cool.

the silly thing here is the stock outlet is TINY. it has a wee small hole to squeeze the air through. no wonder it got hot.
managed to find a small adaptor so it went up to normal size. drilled the adaptor out as much as i could. the outlet is a bit bigger than stock. why they didn't fit the bigger more common size beats me.

Image

fitted a length of cooper pipe and bit of air hose tube. cut down and bored out the stock outlet fitting and fitted it onto the hose.

Image

finished install. a bit rough but it works ok.
the heat is way down, the cooper tube only gets hot not burning hot and the air hose only gets warm.

nice dude.

where did you source the copper tube from? did you have to get a special flaring tool?

the shop i got the fittings from had the pipe as well. otherwise usually someone has a bit of scrap kicking around.
no flaring tool needed with those connectors, just shove the pipe in and tighten it up like you do brake hoses.

if you want to get fancy an old tans or power steer cooler would work great.

Thanks- I'll ask when next at my supplies place. I hadn't thought about asking them for the copper.

Are those fittings the sort with the olive that slides over the pipe?

titon fittings
they have a ferrel inside the nut that slides over the pipe yes.
do the nut up till you feel it goes tight, then turn the nut 1/4-ish turn. you dont wanna over tighten them.

Just did a similar modification to a Bushranger Max Air compressor as it also had a small outlet.

Thought before I used it to much I would see if they were designed that way for a reason?? In other words opening up the air flow will it cause any problems??

I figure that the tiny outlet was designed to reduce the air flow as they normally are running the thin little coil air hoses. I have changed the hose to the normal air compressor hose so in theory it should pump a lot better.

I also run my compressor into a roll cage with a cut off switch at 100psi. Can't see the opening of the hole causing problems but figured best check.

i can understand the outlet of the head being a bit small because you need restriction to make pressure. but then again the tire valve should be the biggest restriction.

i think the typhoon setup is a little odd, the old outlet hole was incredibly tiny. i'll have to go check, i think its a 1/8th fitting, the fitting they normally use to connect the fine hose that goes to pressure gauges on trucks.

the only problem i can imagen would be an increase in pump/motor rpm when under no/low load situations.

the main thing for me was to drop the heat the outlet and hose was getting.

Do you just flare the copper pipe to fit those connections?

no flaring required.

the restriction to cause pressure should be what you are inflating, not the pump itself, if it gets hot unloaded then you are increasing the load on the pump and motor, would not be concerned about pump rpm, it will handle it no problems, using air pressure is all about flow and pressure at the item you are inflating or running, a decent air tool will far out perform on a 12mm line vs 8mm line. larger line=higher volume

With the amount of water in the air that is a good way to ruin a rollcage! Alot of rollcage rules don't allow rollcages to be used as storage tanks as you can't tell when they have rusted out.

On his truck, It's run through a water trap, and the air connector is removable for inspection of the inside.

tanks are not all that useful with such small air compressors. i wouldn't bother unless you have a big compressor or a dual stage that cuts out at 200-300psi.

still tempted to mod the typhoon some more. get rid of the stock cross over tube and fit either a cooler or small bottle (like arb).

also as a wild idea how about adding a second compressor and rig it up as a dual stage.
